i backed into the garage too fast, look what happened (pics) (updated - bent frame?)

hit the brakes on the way in.. must have been some loose bolts:

the bed came FLYING off and landed perfectly upright, narrowly missing the CR250 behind it! it was incredible!

everything else flew off, too, and landed in this big pile:

and apparently i have a cracked leaf:

i took the opportunity to check out the underside of the bed, does anyone know where i can get a replacement retainer piece (pictured, rusty, but pictured):

i'm thinking i can fab one with sheet metal easily enough, but it'd be nicer if i could just buy one for cheap..

nah, a couple of rot spots (like the one pictured) and a bit of surface rust, but overall it's solid. fiberglass sides go a long way

i'm going to flap disc the whole thing and patch the holes and it'll be like new.

more pics:

the worst spot on the frame:

it looks pretty bad, but it's all surface rust, pretty superficial. i went at it with a hammer in a few spots and it's all solid.

i'm going to flap disc the whole frame down to bare metal and paint it with tremclad or something. does anyone think i should be using primer first, or will just straight paint work?

adam (da_bigg_wigg) grinding the spring hanger pin off. those things were in there tight, we wasted no time trying to pound them and went straight to cutting them off. we cut them flush with the hanger, then spread the hanger with Thor The Claw Hammer (tm) to get the springs out. Worked pretty well.

edit: and yes, i know i need bigger jack stands. leave me alone.

can you sandblast the frame? and i'd always primer first, unless tremclad says no need.

sandblasting would be pretty awesome but i don't have the means. my compressor's tiny and i'm broke.. so...

i'm thinking a big knotted wire wheel and some flap discs will get all the loose stuff off, and then i'll hit the rust that's down inside the pits with that permatex rust converter stuff. then just paint over the whole thing with a thick coat of tremclad.

thanks for the offer - i've actually got an extra full pack and a few leaves a buddy lent me the other day, so i'll be able to get it back together. to think, though, this all started with wanting to fix my saggy rear end ;D

.....You must try a Sierra Nevada (out of Colorado), sometime. Our domestics suck, but there's some really good microbrews floating around. Knock your socks off, eh.

oh, i've heard rave reviews about sierra nevada beer. there's plenty of american microbrew (and some macrobrew) i'd love to get up here, but alas..

an update on the truck: i need a respirator. i've been at it for about an hour and i'm blowing the blackest, nastiest snot i've ever seen. i've been wearing those disposable dust masks but they're next to worthless. this seriously cannot be good for my health.

some pics:

passenger rail before:

passenger rail after:

driver top rail:

passenger top rail:

crossmember: (note the plume of rust dust )

and something i discovered - my frame is bent. anyone know if this is something serious? it's only bent in the c-channel part, as far as i can tell, and only a bit. looks like someone hit the bumper or something.

that's all, i need to find a respirator before i can do more.. i'm dying here.

thanks for looking
