In the spring I will be doing the timing chain in my 22RE. It seems like a good idea to put a new cam in it. I'll probably go with a mild, RV style cam like Engnbldr's 268 or Comp Cams 252S.

I'm wondering how it will effect fuel economy as this is a daily driver. One school of thought is more cam = more air = more fuel. But on the other hand if there is more available power you wont be beating the crap out of the engine just to keep moving.

I'm not starting ProjectMPG or anything, I'm just curious. So for those of you who have put a mild cam in the 22RE....did it help or hurt your gas mileage?

Not so much the Cam as the right peddle .

If your commute is State 2 lane roads and city streets you might not notice much of a difference .

If your on the Mass Pike or any of the other Interstates it could very well be like dumping the after burners

It really comes down to how you drive.It gives you better response in a useable range so your going to use it . I know I did.

I did not know my one 4Runner had a Cam till I came across one of the other owners. A few years later.

Most of my driving is on the highway. I'm pretty gently on it and usually just drive the speed limit. Right now I'm getting 24-25mpg after correcting for 31's. Everything is bone stock except for the tires. General cruising RPM is 2500-2700RPM.

I'd like to have a few extra lb-ft of torque for when I need it. The only time I really miss it is merging on to the highway.

I would have thought there would be more posts to this thread.

Truth be told with gas being so expensive I have not checked my mileage in a very long time.

My personal gas usage is little less then $125.00 a month the rest is paid by work.

I was hoping for some more responses as well. I have always had stock cams and wondering what the other cams did for other peoples mileage.

When I redid my top end including the timing chain, t-cover, water pump etc I went with an LCE pro torquer cam and their header along with an egr delete. I have a sky winch bumper, winch, rear bumper, 32" km2s, custom tailgate.... she's a heavy girl.
Before the head job and such best I averaged uncorrected mileage was 23mpg on a straight interstate trip. All the time I averaged 19mpg uncorrected.
After the cam, header, replacing several sensors(thermo time switch, ecu coolant temp and a sonic cleaned csi) I average 19mpg corrected.
I took a good hit on mug BUT the torque I gained is well with it!!! I have no problem cruising around town in 4th. And interstate driving is 5th 95% of the time unless I approach a grade of mountainous proportions.
In my experience the LCE torquer was worth the cash. I would like to see how other cams perform tho.
