How much MTF is enough?
1990 PU, 4x4, 5sp, 22RE: How much MTF should be in the tranny? I'm not asking for a specific volume; here's the situation: I know where the drain/ fill plugs are, but I also know that you can put in MTF through the shifter opening inside the cab- so if I were to put MTF into the shifter opening, should I fill it all the way to the top? Can you overfill it? Also, are there any good MTF additives or conditioners for older transmissions?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Yeah - have somebody observe when it starts coming out the fill plug, and then stop pouring. It's OK to overfill a LITTLE bit as the level will drop when the gears get turned the first time.
You want to be sure the oil you get isn't TOO slick - it's harder on the synchros, they need a little friction to be able to spin up. My recomendations would be Redline MT90 or GM Synchromesh.

Cool, thanks. The reason I was curious about this was last night I opened the fill plug, & fluid actually started coming out of the fill plug, I quickly screwed it right back in to avoid a mess. Is it too full? What can happen if there's too much MTF?

well if its filled all the way to the top im sure itll start coming out of the shifter when gears are being spun and shifted n such, im sure ur tranny is filled fine, and not overfilled,

For what its worth, I just drained and filled my tranny with Red Line MT-90. I too was concerned about overfilling it, so I waited until a trickle came out of the fill plug. That took approximately 3.5 quarts. I drove it around for a bit and it took about another .2 quarts or so before it started overflowing out of the fill plug.
That extra .2 quarts is probably insigificant, but as tc said, the level did drop a little bit.

the FSM for our W56 tranny in the 90's says 3.2 qts., that said I added a little more than that from the top when I changed my clutch a few weeks ago
