how large a tire should I be using?

I bought a 1994 Toyota 4X4 pickup DLX, 5 speed , 22RE, lifted 6 inches [El Rancho] 120,000 miles.

When I drove it home it had 245X75X15 tires on it. My wife led in front of me she did 65 mph , to keep pace with her my speedometer read 90 mph and 4000 RPM. We stopped for gas when her van had 200 miles on the odometer, the Toyota pickup had 257 miles on the odometer. Took 10.0 gallons of gas.

So I put 33X10.50X 15 tires on the pickup, now to keep pace with her at 65 mph , My speedometer says 74 mph at 3000RPM.

Will going to 35X12.50X15 tires make the speedometer more correct and bring down the RPMs? And allow me to get better gas mileage?

I am sure the gears in the rear and front ends have been replaced, but have no idea what the ratio is now. Even with the 33 inch tires I have plenty of power. I do mostly hiway driving.

thanks for your replies

Your assumptions are correct.
35's or even 37's will bring the speedo closer back to actual speed.
