Hood mat

while cleaning my engine bay in my 94 runner, i kinda messed up that yellow mat thing under the hood. I was wondering how important it is to keep that and/or what have y'all done in replace of that, I think that its there to help reduce heat or noise in the engine bay maybe like spray on beliner or something. but i was just wodering that y'all have done

its more of heat shielding than a sound barrier.

The hood insulator serves two purposes, both of which have already been mentioned.

1. Heat repulsion/absorbtion. Its designed to keep the hood of the truck from getting overheated and ruining the paint. Most of the V6 trucks and 4Runners came with this. I think it was part of the SR5 package? The 4Cyl doesn't usually have it, since it didn't generate enough heat.

2. Sound deadening. While it doesn't make it super duper quiet, it does absorb some of the sound which quiets the truck down.
