Help! Overdive surging!
Greetings all. My name is Allen. I recently purchased a 95 4runner. Over all it is a pretty solid truck. 221,000k and drives out great. I have had one issue eating me though. When I am reaching around 40-45 mph:roughly when the overdrive should kick in as Im cruising at this particular speed it wants to surge in and out of overdrive. It doesn't do it at any other speed. My dad was an AutoTech for about 40 years and we have tried only to adjust the detent cable but no results. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I am not familiar with the automatics in the Toyota's. However, from what I have learned from working on other cars is that you can try checking the automatic transmission fluid and making sure its full and maybe do a flush. Another thing that I think I remember is that the pre-95 4runners and pickup's didn't have the best designed automatic transmissions and had a poorly matched overdrive. However, don't quote me on that.

All the fluids are fine and the one thing that was somewhat of an issue is when I first bought the truck the detent appeared to be a little melted from where it was against the EGR tube on the exhaust manifold. It seems to be working properly and it isn't frayed or anything of that nature. I was wondering does it by chance maybe have a filter that could be serviced? At this point I'm just concerned that the transmission might be on the route to going out...Thanks

yes the trans has a filter. i dont like doing trans flushes. i usually get in there myself and change the fluid and filter instead. similar to changing oil, maybe a little more difficult since you have to get the trans pan to seal again......and it makes a good mess on the driveway sometimes

Cable is the line pressure regulator. Its probebly in od but searching for lockup. I have to drive very easy on the gas to keep lockup below 60 in od but it should try a low loads after 45-47. Normaly i leave od off unless im gonna go over 55, less hunting less wear.
Side note i would not flush the fluid unless its been regularly changed all its life. Autos tend to meltdown after a fluid change. That lesson cost me a little over 2k. Search for the fsm its a great help dealing with these things
