Help me find the correct radiator cap: Aftermarket Radiator

Last summer I purchased a new radiator after several overheating incidents. Well that fixed the problem, but now I am having issues with the cap.

The radiator is 432041, and when I bought it the name was Ready-Rad. Now it is Murray? I've also seen it under Proliance and Modine. Anyways, it is a single core, 2" aluminum with plastic caps.

To my surprise, it took a different radiator cap, not my original one. They didn't have any information (from the manufacturer) on which cap fit, but we found a 13lb cap that seemed to work (it was Motorad brand, can't recall part#).

When I installed the cap, the seal didn't seem as tight as my previous cap. Meaning, when you feel the seal make contact, it doesn't clamp down much more after that. My original cap clamped down really well, so I know it was making a good seal.

Well now I have been discovering coolant seeping out from around the cap. I'm not sure how long it has been going on but I haven't really had to add coolant until now (since I installed the new rad). Also, I've noticed my coolant pressure it lost rather quickly (since the install). With my old radiator, I could go outside hours after driving, loosen the cap and hear the "pop" of the pressure releasing. Not the same story with the new one.

I can't find ANY information about what cap will fit it...I want a STANT part number or something. I can't even find information on the manufacturer so I can make a phone call. So maybe one of you installed a 432041 recently and remeber what cap you used?

TL;DR Installed Ready-Rad 432041 radiator. OEM cap doesn't work. Need to find out which cap fits 432041. 1987 SR5 Pickup, 22RE.

Thanks!

The manufacturer made updates to radiator 432041 since the initial post. They corrected the radiator cap issue, so now the original radiator cap should fit this aftermarket radiator. In my case, it was a Murray 7513.

You may find something useful here regarding Ready-Rad caps:
http://www.vistaproauto.com/engine-cooling

http://www.stant.com/part_locator/index.cfm Stant 10227 - no, per OP.

Thanks! I was looking for that vistaproauto website...I knew I saw it before but I couldn't locate it.

Stant 10227 will not work on the 432041 radiator. It is the original radiator cap and it will work on my original Toyota radiator. This is the problem because I can only search for radiator caps by vehicle.

I think the best thing to do is call Vista-Pro. The should be able to help...I see they have various tech tips regarding other radiators, just not the 432041.

Thanks again!

Another possibility:
Pull up this http://www.4crawler.com/4Runner.shtml and do a search on radiator.....the Stant 329 looks to be re-numbered as the Stant 10329 (or 10229 w/o safety release) now. 4crawler is a member on this site, fyi.

http://www.stant.com/common/part_loc...m.cfm?id=10329

Use the Stant tool above and use 84 for the model year.

Great! Looks like we have a winner. How did you find out 329 had been renumbered to 10329/10229?

I looked up the equivalent Motorad cap (T13) for Stant 10229. The cap looks different than the one I have (mine has a circular top w/ the two little ears, the T13 has a hex top), so maybe I do have the wrong one...or its just an older style. My cap doesn't have the part# stamped on it so I don't know.

Thanks!

I could not find a 329 cap on the Stant website so the 10329 made sense to me since the cap that fits the original radiator is 10227.

That is when I put your info into the Stant catalog, but for a 1984 and it returned 10329/10229. So, basically I'm just sleuthing it out. This may be useful too:

Your idea of calling (or emailing) Vista-Pro may be the best way to find out for sure. Good luck!

Well, I did some calling around.

Vista-Pro wasn't any help. First they gave me STANT 10227/10327. I hung up before I realized those are for the original radiator. Called back and they still couldn't help...the guy said to try 10241. Just looking at 10241 and the measurement specs of the equivalant Motorad cap, I know 10241 will not work either (its smaller than 10227/10327).

Vista-Pro said to call back if it doesn't work, and they will get a hold of an engineer to look into it...

Called STANT asking about 329. The gal said she would assume it is 10329. I would assume the same thing, but still I want a definite answer.

I am going to go with 10329/10229. I'm fairy certain it will work.

Thanks for the detective work!

I finally picked up the STANT 10229, and it seems like the correct cap. I was relieved to see that it snugged up more (tighter seal) than than the other cap I had on there.

Also, I noticed that my hood had been making contact with the radiator cap. There is a slight rub mark on the underside of the hood (not the outer shell, but the structural part). I put some paint on the edge of the cap and lowered the hood little by little until I got a mark on the hood. It is making contact, but just barely. I hope to pound out the part of the hood that is in the way to make room...

The hood may have been part of my problem, but the new cap fits better, so that is a plus.

It would help to have a pic of the fill neck on your radiator. Aftermarket rads sometimes switch from a standard automotive fillneck to a small import one (or vice versa) and there are 2 similar import ones that are different.

Just for FYI..

You can snug down a loose cap by benting the tabs on the cap, make sure you inspect the rubber it doesn't work if it's paper thin.

Did you ever find a cap that works for you? I have been running the 10229 since my last post and haven't had any issues. Maybe they changed the style since I bought it? Here are some pictures of my setup:

So I ended up having to replace the radiator as it was beginning to seep near the bottom of the core. Luckily I have a lifetime warranty on it so I just got a replacement 432041. Turns out they have changed it a bit from when I bought it 2 years ago. They fixed the radiator cap issue, so now the radiator cap is what it should be for the make/model/year of the truck...so this is probably the issue that yodafan93 ran into. The radiator cap I picked up is Murray 7513. Also, they changed the height of the upper cap to look more like the original; therefore, there is no longer any clearance issues between the cap and the hood like I was having before.
