Ok so as most of you know I just got done putting a new head, cam, timing set, oil pump, water pump, ect on my 1990 4runner 22re. Since then I have noticed a noise, which I'm not sure if was there before the job or not because i bought it not running.

It only happens while the truck is moving, under acceleration, usually past 1/4 throttle. It doesn't happen if I coast, or if I stop or push the clutch in.

My girlfriends 22re (94 p/u) has the same exact noise. I always thought it was either odo or speedo cable but now I'm just not sure. Hopefully you guys can help me figure it out.

This video was taken on a flat highway in 5th gear. You hear the noise when i am on the gas, it disapears when I let off.

I had that exact same noise in my '91 Pickup. Although I never found out for sure what the noise was it was a general consensus that it was coming from the bell-housing of the transmission.

Well, I think everyone's gonna want to know why the check engine light is on.

The check engine light is only on because I have the fuel pump jumpered in the OBD port, so it's throwing a code. While the fuel pump wont run without it jumpered, it doesn't throw a code un-jumpered.

If its the noise I think I am listening to, then it really sounds like an exhaust leak.

does it do it when revving at rest?

nope, only while moving and on the throttle.

mine (new rebuild less than 1000 miles) does this too although yours is louder, do you have headers? I think mine is either a ping or just simple header noise.

nope, no headers. I didn't think it was a ping because it sounds much different than any other ping I have heard.

hmmm update if you figure it out, sounds real similar to the problem I have, but i got headers and carb. Which is more prone to ping since there is no knock sensors. Could be an exhaust leak too. But I think someone already mentioned that. Did you ever re-torque the exhaust manifold down after running it for a while?

Nope I didn't re-torque.

I will try that tomorrow to try and eliminate that possibility. I just wanted to make sure it wasn't a heavy ping and damaging my poor old engine.

Check the joints where the head pipe bolts to the manifold, and to the cat. Check also for dark sooty areas, those are usually dead giveaways.

You can also find a leak by pouring a little seafoam or ATF into the brake booster vacuum hose. The smoke from burning the oil will leak out of the hole.

I think it has something to do with an overload of fuel in the system mine does simlar when im pulling it hard and usualy at higher rpms it usually stops when i stop pushing it hard and slow down for awhile

Thank you, this helped immensely. Now that I think about it, before I put the exhaust heat shield back on, i noticed a small sooty black spot on the top of the exhaust manifold, that's probably it. Didn't think much of it at the time, just thought i spilled a little right there. Will re-torque tomorrow.

I'm gonna have to re-torque mine again, especially if this solves it for you. I've tightened mine up twice already. the torque specs on these obiously dont mean anything and I put in the LCE header bolts when I did my rebuild.
