Help 95 4runner auto v6 with 33's cant accelerate over 65mph
This is my first time posting so I hope i am doing this right. I have a 1995 4runner that I put a 4inch Pro Comp lift and 33 inch BFG all-terrains. It has the 3.0 V6 with the automatic transmission and it is 4wd. According to what I can find on the internet my gears are 4.88's which I thought were fine for 33's. Well when I am on the highway the truck stops accelerating even on flat land at 65 miles per hour. The RPMs are low though around 2800 to 3000 with red line being at 5000. Its like i do not have any torque left to accelerate. On steep hills I can not even maintain 45 miles per hour. I am at a loss. Everyone I have talked to says 4.88 should be the perfect gears for those tires. Any suggestions???
Other facts about the truck: I have done a full tune up inluding plugs, wires, pcv valve, fuel filter, cap and rotor.
New K&N intake system.
New Dynomax Exhaust
129k miles on engine but runs great.

First off, that's one of the best first posts I've seen from a member in a long time.
Nice work.
About your problem, I had a similar issue with my '95 with my 33's but I could get it up to 75mph and that was it.
Have you tried manually shifting it to maximize your torque?
When you're going 65 how far down do you have the pedal pressed?
What are the RPM's when you're topped out?

Welcome to Yotatech!
And like Fink said, an excellent first post.
(and nice looking truck too.)
One thing I saw was you said you did a tune up. But you didn't say if you set the timing? If you did, what did you do to set it?
There is a procedure involved which includes having to put the ECU in to the proper mode to set the timing. If you didn't do that, the timing will not be correct and will cause a loss of power at higher rpm's.

Are you sure they're 4.88's?
If you take overdrive off (and you should if you can't get it to rev so you don't fry the tranny) does the speed go up?
That 65 miles per hour is that with a GPS? If you're going by the speedo it will show a slower speed than actual.

Thanks for the reply and the compliment.
At 65 I can press the pedal all the way down and the rpms will not rise from 3000. I can let off the gas to about 3/4 or maybe even a little less and the rpms barely drop while my speed stays the same. It really feels like either a gear problem or the transmission shifting points are off so it is not dropping down into that passing gear.
The highest rpms Ive seen the truck get to is in second when I floor the pedal I can hit 3500 rpm before it shifts.

Ok i am trying to keep up here. No I did not reset the timing.
Secondly I did not even think about taking overdrive off. I should have. I will try that and get back to you.
Third I was going by speedo which im sure is off thanks to the bigger tires. I will use my gps next time and turn off the overdrive and repost my results.

4.88's seem a little too good to be true, I had 4.10's in my '95 and they sucked.
I totally forgot about overdrive, guess I've had my Tacoma for too long.
Definitely take overdrive off and see what happens - more than likely that is your problem.
Goes along with my downshift suggestion also.

V6 and auto should have 4.56 gears unless it has the 31" tire package, which could be the 4.88s.
on the door jamb plate:
g294 = 4.10:1 gear ratio, 4 pinion (v6 differentials)
g284 = 4.30
g254 = 4.56
g214 = 4.88

All 92-95 4runners and pickups with a 3vze, auto and 31" tire package from the factory got the 4.88 gears.
It really doesnt matter becasue 4.88's are too tall for the autotragic. If you wanna run 33's and still have power throw a set of 5.29's in the diffs. The 4.88's were matched to 31" tires, and even then it was too undergeared..

First I turned off Overdrive. You probably saved my transmissions life. Cant believe I did not think about it but thank you.
My truck came with the 28's so I guess it has the 4.10s.
I just used gps to figure my speed on the highway. My speedo was 5 mph slow.
Without OD I can do 60 at 3000 rpm roughly.
Without OD I can do 74 at 3900 rpm exactly.
These are GPS speeds.

I believe you have higher than 4:10s I have 4:10s on my 90 pickup 3.0 auto and my speedo is 15mph off at 60 miles per hour.Meaning my speedo says 45 but Im going 60.I have 33x12.5 mud tires i get roughly 10-12 mpg and it sucks!!!!
Also,my truck won't even shift into cruising gear(the final gear)because the ecu has realized that the rpms are to low in that gear roughly 1600-1800 so I ride around in 4th gear at 2500 rpms at 60 mph

The first post I made was with OD on.
Just to avoid confusion my truck goes faster with OD off.
When I turn off the OD it allowed me to use the higher rpms to get up to 74 mph according to the gps at 3900 rpm. If OD is on the best i can do is GPS 70 on flat ground.
