Help 92 axle went bad .. need advice

Good morning guys..

I need your help.... the axle bearing went bad and now my mechanic said that I have to replace it.

My 1992 4runner is 4X4 and from New York. It has some rust issue in the undercarriage

Now I live in Texas and my axle is gone. He said that bearing went bad and caused some grinding in the inside, He said I need new axle.

Can some please let me know my options?

So I have to replace the whole thing?

If so, do I have to find exact match? Or can I swap it from other different toyota truck for different years. I now live in Mcallen Texas so parts might be hard to get but still attainable.

To replace with used axle plus both drums might cost from 1500-2000. It might cost less..This is just rough estimate for the axle and brakes and installation. But he warned me that there might be other things wrong..like rusted brake lines and other stuff.

I don;t want to let go of my 4runner but would it just be better to find another 1992 4runner....

Please I need your advice on what I should do. BTW..I don;t have much money..I just had my 2nd son and i am getting laid off in 4 weeks. My 4runner is my main transportation.

Thanks again for the advice

Haha, well dude I think a lot of us can relate...

If you're required to get a new axle, you need to find one out of a similar truck, and make sure it's geared the same. Unless your backing plates, and rear drum setup are absolutely trashed, you should be able to swap it all over easy enough. Get a second opinion on the bearing etc, you may just be able to change out the bearing and everything else may be fine, your mechanic could just be looking for a decent paycheck.

thanks Skoalbandit .....thanks for the advice. I can hear it grind/rubbing from the outside of my truck from the rear drivers side. if it scratch or scortched the housing then I'll need replacing. I called nix99.com and quated me for rear axle with the drumbs @ 600 shipping probably cost about 100 -150

You might give this guy a call, Before you do, though, check the ratio that you need.

Good deal. Thing to watch out for is that the ratio of the unit that you are getting is the same as the ratio of the unit that you are replacing so that the front and rear differentials match.

DId you already check the local junkyards their locally. I know there is a few in pharr off of hwy 83. I think Mission has some on the 3 mile line and conway.
LIke the others have said be sure and check the ratios are the same if you do buy the whole axles with the pumpkins. I am originally from Mission and now here in California, I miss living there . I hear 83 has gotten a bunch more lanes to it.

Add your location to your profile.

Find your local Toyota club and join. Post this problem there. Be humble and polite and learn to do the wrenching from your new friends. Buy the food and beer. Folks will show up ready to help, with tools and possibly parts. Be humble and polite and learn to do the wrenching from your new friends.

If that doesn't happen, you joined the wrong club, try another.

Be humble and polite and learn to do the wrenching from your new friends.

If Texans are half as great as they think they are, you'll be set.
