Heater Control Issues

86 P/U, 22r, A/C,

So for the past few weeks I only had OFF-LOW-MED controls, no HIGH. When I turned it to HIGH it would just cut off, nada. So I just dealt with it. The other day it stopped working on all speeds.

I then searched/researched and got familiar with what I was looking at. I checked the resistor (1st) and heater switch plug (2nd) according to the 85 FSM. The resistor was slightly corroded, and one of the coils was eaten through. I took a single thin strand of copper wire, hooked it on that coil and I re-installed it. Then the controls went back to OFF-LOW-MED, not HIGH.

I then checked the plug, it showed a problem with the HIGH setting, I don't remember which #'s didn't have continuity off the top of my head. Basically, I think I need to replace the 4 position switch in the dash.

All this happens with A/C on or off, no difference.

Does this sound right? How the hell do I get that thing out of there? It's pretty tight. Thanks for any insight.

Nice! I haven't seen this one yet. I'll pull it out, I'm not sure about fabbing up a whole new copper piece. We'll see. Thanks.

It sounds like you need a new fan switch. The part that sucks is that you have to pull the whole dash a part to change it. Its not that hard to do, but its very time consuming. Ive replaced heater cores in two 86 4Runners, so i know whats involved.
