Headlight time...again....H4 conversion

My wal mart head lights are going out again. One is just an orange glow now. I'm ready to get some super bright lights and quit fighting this battle.

I've read some on the hella 72200 that some here speak highly of. I've never been into the hid thing, but was looking to do that this time for the bright I want. Word is that the hella 72200 are the ticket.
Exactly what all is needed to install these lights? From the little reading I've done it sounds like a little more than just swapping headlights. Is there a how to anywhere or can some of you please fill me in on what all is needed to do this?

Is there a better option than the 72200? I'm open to all ideas at the moment.

the truck is a 94 4x4 pickup.

Housings are simple swap in, H4 bulbs plug right in. For best results use a new headlight harness, I got mine from LROF.

I don't have those bulbs, but they look like they are pretty good. I would do the wire upgrade for sure, even if you don't buy those bulbs. It made a big difference with my headlights.

What all is entailed in the harness upgrade?

so basically, all the h4 swap is putting new lights/bulbs in?

I'll let Roger Brown explain it.

Yep, pretty much explained a lot! Thanks. Basically I need the headlights and wiring kit. Not that bad it doesn't look like. I need new lights and I'm tired of headlight troubles every so often and blown bulbs/lights

Assuming that your avatar photo is your truck, you have the standard 6054 square sealed beams.
you could go to "XtraVision" sealed beams
or "Euro Code" beams with H4 bulbs
or "cheapo" LED conversion beam (I wouldn't, but you be your own judge)
or
if you have $$$ - go proper LED
-- not a fan of the Grote, but they are legit
-- the Philips are DOT legit but are $$$

I changed mine over to replacement ligt assemblies using 9003 capsule bulbs . not as bright as hid but much brighter than the 6054 bulbs . got them off ebay for $23.00 bulbs included . they are direct replacement for the 6054 and did not require wiring upgrade. did however have to soak trim screws to break the rust

If the hella 72200 and the supplied bulb will work, be a simple swap and be bright, I'd like to go that route.

yes, that's the truck in my avatar. Those are wal mart special 6054 lamps. Canthe remember the exact brand and number I got though.

you could start by putting just the harness/relays in, see how much of a difference that makes.

I asked 4crawler today about his harness, but said they are putting the final touches on it still. I'm going to gather ahead and order the lights now and get them in. What bulbs are the brightest? On amazon, it looks as if the bulbs aren't overly expensive

I ordered the hella kit today from rally lights. They were the most helpful and useful company I have ever dealt with. Very thorough and extremely helpful and answered all questions. There were many options on bulbs and I went with the 60/55W Hella Xenon +50% bulbs. They talked highly of them and said the light was great. I hope they're right. I also got them to go ahead and build me a harness to upgrade the factory the system. Maybe I will have a good, quality light now that will last me

If you are still interested (or if others are interested) I have had fantastic results with the combo I went with. I bounced around a lot trying to find the best way brighten the road. So this is what I went with:
  • MICTUNING (LUMA+) H4, 9003, HB2, Hi/Lo Beam Cree LED headlights Bulbs _ 80W 8,000LM white plug and Play conversion kit
  • HELLA 190 x 132mm Series H4 High and low beam headlamp kit.
So far I am super happy with the LED headlights and HELLA housings. Its a night and day difference (literally). I angled the lights down a bit so that I don't blind other drivers, but even with them down I can see WAY farther down the street than the
original bulbs. Before, I couldn't see more than 20 feet in front of me (stock bulb). Now, easily 60 feet or more.

YES ^^^! I could not stress enough that proper wiring is most important, as explained above, regardless of what bulb you use. Using higher power bulbs like some people do makes matters worse by subjecting the wiring and dimmer-stalk-switch contacts to even higher currents.

Here are my results before and after retrofit:
Voltage Drop Comparisons:
With Sealed Beam & Engine off

Stock Wiring
Low Beam:
Batt: 12.05V, Across low beam filament (pins 1 & 3): 11.15V
Voltage drop in wiring: 0.9V
volt drop = 7.5% of battery voltage
High Beam:
Batt 11.94, Across high beam filament (pins 2 & 3): 10.07
Volt drop: 15.7% of battery voltage!

After Retrofit:
Low Beam:
Batt: 12.31V, : Across low beam filament (pins 1 & 3): 12.11V
Volt Drop: 0.2 = 1.6% of Battery voltage
High Beam:
Batt: 12.24V, Across high beam filament (pins 2 & 3): 11.78V
Voltage drop: =0.46V = 3.75% of battery voltage
