headlight covers for 84-89 style grille

hi all!

if you've ever done a search for headlight covers for the 84-88PU/84-894R style grille, you've probably seen them listed, but the picture is always some stock photo of a Ford.

how the heck are we supposed to know what the cover looks like on our truck? are we supposed to buy them blindly and hope they're not cheap crap?

well, i saw a set of the GTS brand on fleabay, and they were actually pictured. i made a low offer, and they accepted, so now i'm the proud owner of these:

these are the GTS #GT0970C, which apparently is still a valid number to buy them new. C is clear, S is smoke.

since they just snap on, (kept in place by a closing the hood securely) i thought i'd try them right away, even though my current grille is all busted up.

here's some pics:

from the side:

these are over chrome bezels with a grey grille.

i haven't decided whether to:

paint the bezels flat black and use the covers in clear, with grey grille
or
replace with new chrome bezels and lt. smoke tint the covers

anyway, there they are, now you can decide if you'd like them too. if you notice, my driver's headlight is already bulls-eyed from a stone. that was a cheaper fleabay style replacement housing so i could install H4 silverstars. if it had been a Hella housing, i'd have been really bummed. i didn't want to buy a replacement until i had some stone protection, now i do.

yeah, they're not too bad. they fit pretty snug, and with the hood closed, they should be pretty difficult to remove.

one thing i found interesting, is that the top edges of my headlight bezels were different. one had a 1/2" lip on top that prevented the cover from "locking in" as securely as the other.

if they weren't different, i wouldn't have thought to trim it. but it makes a huge difference. once trimmed, the shape of the covers really "grabs" the bezel.

so - if anyone buys these, and finds that the top doesn't latch on as secure as you think it should, consider trimming 1/2" off the top of the bezels. i scored it with a razor following the molded line, and snapped it cleanly with pliers.

2nd tip: anything plexi like this, LOVES to be cleaned with PLEXUS.

it's an aerosol product made for cleaning jet plane windows. i use it on my motorcycle shield, but any clear plastic lenses will benefit from it.

so whats the point of one of these? is it so you can "smoke" them since you cant really paint sealed beams? does it help with the headlight projection?

i am totally lost lolol

smoked would be nice, if it's smoked like my bmw is, but if it's the dark smoke, then it won't pass in PA.

They look pretty good and would help protect from chips on glass lenses.

Not really a fan of the smoked look. To me reducing the visibility of lights that you need for safety doesnt seem like a positive just for a darker look

no, it's to protect your glass headlight housings from rocks.

about a year ago I replaced the sealed beams with the cheaper housings (available on fleabay) that take an H4 bulb, because i can't afford the more expensive Hella brand housings. they worked pretty well, but i've already got a bull's eye in one from a rock. it became apparent i needed stone guards before replacing the broken housing.

tinting them is just another option for anyone who wants a more modern look to their 20 yr old truck.

i was going to get the old skool style mesh guards, but i think i like these better because they protect the corner markers too,

but,

if you want the mesh guards and are having a hard time finding them, search for "Jeep YJ" which uses the 5x7" sealed beams as well.

here's an example, we'd use just the top pair in this image:

just don't tell anyone.

I do not have a picture of them on the truck. You can see through them with a 100 watt bulb at night but it is limited. These are designed for show. Night time comes just pop them off. Easy to install and remove.
