I have an 87 4Runner that i want to put header and complete exhaust on, ive read through lots of threads on here about exhaust upgrades and that there is a noticable gain in power. I went to the muffler shop that does all my exhaust work and the guy there said i should leave the exhaust pipe the same size as stock or i will loose power. So, if i go with a header and 2 1/4 exhaust including muffler and cat will i get a noticable gain ?, and the muffler shop guy full of schit ?.

i run a lce with a 2.5" flowmaster on my 22re , i would go with 2 1/4 with a stock head

i had a Lce header and 2.25'' exhaust to a flowmaster delta 40 on my 22re gave it a nice boost in power plus it sounded awesome

I'm a custom exhaust fabricator out here in PHX at GHL Motorsports. I do ferrari's lambo's, porshe's, etc.... I built my own 22RE header on my '93, basically modeling LCE's design, and I hooked it onto my stock cat-back to save some time. When I got more time, I fabricated a catback out of 2 1/4'' pipe and the first time I drove it I could tell it lost the low end torque that it gained when I initially built the header. Also, make sure you throw a magna-flow style muffler on it with the same size inlet/outlets as the pipe you use. Don't be dumb and put a 2 1/2'' flowmaster on it and think that just cause it's bigger it's better. I had to build a whole new system from 2'' and that has worked great every since. Your exhaust guy knows what he's talkin about.
