head unit problem 94 PU
94 pu 3vze 5 spd
i've looked around on tons of threads about this and can't come to a conclusion. i hooked up a sony xplod head unit by splicing wires( i know a harness would be better) and i can't get the back speakers to work if the cd player or aux is on, only the fm radio.. there's only one blue wire on the harness for the sony xplod. does this mean i have factory amps? if so or if not, what do i do??

I'm confused here
so you just installed a head unit, or a head unit AND an amp?
sounds like you have a power antenna output on you head unit, not a remote amp turn on, and that's what's connected to your amp power
the power antenna output will ONLY be hot when the radio is selected
a remote amp power output will ALWAYS be hot when the head unit is turn on, no matter the play-back source
did you buy your head unit brand new? if so, look closer at the wiring diagram to see if there is in fact 2 separate outputs for a power antenna and a remote amp power-up
if all else fails, take that wire you spliced into the blue wire off the head unit (the wire leading to the amp's power-up input), and hook it to a switched 12v with the key, so that the amp will ALWAYS be powered on with the key turned, thus solving the problem
I've never bought a direct wiring harness for ANY stereo install; I've always hard-wired them in myself

I do recommend a shop BUT if you are bound to diy here is the stock wiring colors for the toyota double check what you did.
Car Radio Battery Constant 12v+ Wire: Blue/Yellow
Car Radio Accessory Switched 12v+ Wire: Gray
Car Radio Ground Wire: Brown
Car Radio Illumination Wire: Green
Car Stereo Dimmer Wire: Brown
Car Stereo Antenna Trigger: N/A
Car Stereo Amp Trigger Wire: N/A
Car Stereo Amplifier Location: N/A
Car Audio Front Speakers Size: N/A
Car Audio Front Speakers Location: N/A
Left Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Pink
Left Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Violet
Right Front Speaker Positive Wire (+): Light Green
Right Front Speaker Negative Wire (-): Blue
Car Audio Rear Speakers Size: N/A
Car Audio Rear Speakers Location: N/A
Left Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Black
Left Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): Yellow
Right Rear Speaker Positive Wire (+): Red
Right Rear Speaker Negative Wire (-): White
Just remember the stock wiring is ALWAYS different colors than after market. i.e constant =yellow, battery = red, aux amp turn on = Blue etc. your stock wiring will not have a aux turn on. that is a seperat wire you have to run.

the dimmer wire in particular, cause now I know where I can get the dimming use with my aftermarket gauges!

i'm talking about a factory amp.. i'm not sure if i have one preinstalled for the back speakers? and i wouldn't know what wire from the dash would go to that..
those charts are what i used and were mostly correct but as i said i dont know what to connect to power the amp or what to do to bypass it.. i'm replacing all four speakers too so if i could bypass it that'd be better...

also i got the head unit about a year ago it was spliced into my old honda so i just had the head unit and the wire harness i went by the installdr.com wire colors for typical stereos because they all matched what the sony had

a solid blue wire is a UNIVERSAL for the amp output on aftermarket head units
did you connect this to anything at all?
if the back speakers are at least working in radio, this leads me to believe a stereo problem...
for some reason the head unit turns off the rear output in CD player? maybe it only outputs through RCA jacks? not sure why that would be the case, but who knows...

honestly dude if you have the blue wire(on head unit) hooked to anything take it off! second the Yellow of the stock wiring is speaker but the yellow on the deck is constant power. the yellow from the head would connect to the blue/yellow. if you do not have a blue yellow then some body had done already jacked ur truck. ok here is an easy question. did your old head usit say JBL on it? if not then i doubt it is amplified.
if so remove the old speakers and run new wire and buy some new speakers
