Unhappy Head Gasket Woes...Again

Well here we are yet again. Last winter I did the H/G on the pickup and for the past 20k she's been doing just fine until this past weekend. I believe the head is bad it did the exact same thing as last year, blowing white smoke but no milkshake.

We were heading out to Rausch Creek for the weekend and were 50 miles from home when it went out. So I dumped a gallon of water in her and headed home. I had to stop 3 more times, kept an eye on the temp, and added a gallon each time.

Thanks honey...

Not a fun 50 mile trek home but I can't say she left me stranded. So for the trip we unpacked the truck, unloaded the trailer, repacked the trailer and 3 of us crammed into a Jeep for a 6 hour drive.

Last night I messed with the truck a bit and started to break it down. She did fire up and idled fine but then started to do the milkshake.

So I drained the oil and dad and I started into it. Got the P/S pump off, Rad out, upper intake, AFM, fuel rail out. Lower intake and exhaust manifold are loose. Not bad for 1.5 hours!!! Goes much faster the second time around.

Plugs didn't seem all that bad...

So I thought about it and contacted Ted and gave him a parts list so I could get a price. Going with new head (thinking RV) T-chain kit and cover, oil pump, water pump. Sending the injectors out to WitchHunter as well.

I figured if I'm in there again may as well do it all...I don't want to be in there again in another 20k-30k for a pump or timing cover. And I did break off the top of the timing guide last time I was in there.

I did break the crank bolt using the starter...just 1 little bump and off it came.

Since 92_Toy has all this documented I'll just follow his thread...

Sucks to hear about the head gasket. Last time you did it did you take the head into the machine shop to get it checked out? Since you've done this before it should go pretty quick.

No I didn't and I think that's why it went out again. I think the previous owner let it over heat, I had to replace the rad last year as well. So when this happened last year I think it was warped a bit and then I replaced the HG on a bad head. Thus causing the same type of failure. So instead of getting it checked shaved I'm just going with a new head.

I'm on it like a wet blanket....scribededed! lol.

Sorry for the stupid question, but....you're sure it's not the timing cover worn through?

Best wishes, Lumpy, ..... WRENCH ON! lol.

Ya, its not the cover...When it went I was blowing white smoke out the exhaust but when I checked the oil it was alright. That's why I decided to limp home the 50 miles and not tow it. Before I started it last night the oil was ok, I ran it for about 45 seconds checked the oil and it was starting to mix so I drained the oil straight away.

I'll be pulling the head on Friday, I don't have time to get to it before then. I also hope to have my order into Ted Friday. Gotta scrounge all the pennies I can for this one.

hahaha...he said "Pennies"......YEAH, RIGHT! LOL. Jk, I knew whatcha meant, hehe.

Honest, I'm sorry you're dealing with this, Lumpy, but hey, you're gonna be happy with the fresh head/extra torque. You going with the 261? He pretty much told me, as I remember, "Yeah, unless you're going to make this more of a trail/crawler rig, ...I'd stick with the 261".

Gotta LOVE Ted, he's so professional, helpful, and he's never tried to sell me ANYTHING! In fact, he pumped up some other guys, even DOA, whom he said when people were picking on the owner(TIM?), "Not sure why people are having issues with him, but, Yeah, this kid knows his stuff,...He's always ahead of us on the tracks....Not sure if it's practical for most people, but on the HIGH performance end? ....He's GOOD!" Really respect Ted!

So, any other mods in the works? AND, ...what of the Lumpy/Chef style "eat off my engine" mods? hahahaha, jk, jk.

Last winter I installed the 268 and I'm happy with it so I'll be staying there for now. Later on I might get the 261 but not sure as of yet, if I do it won't be for a few years.

I was going to just get the Pro series head but opted for the Street RV...I'll be doing the intake/battery swap on this rebuild.

Well as far as the "Eat off my Engine" that you and 92 have done. I'll be a hell of a site nicer than it is now but as far as getting it that clean...I donno.

You can always build a poor man's soda blaster with a $5 air gun and a bit of hose, soda-blasting the outside of the block should clean it up all nice shiny and purdy.

is the street RV head modified in any way, or is it just a fancy name for a stock head?

Chef, come clean my engine bay

I've got to admit; the level of cleanliness in that engine bay is comparable to mine before I did my engine rebuild
