Head Gasket replaced and now sputtering while accelerating
Hello, I have an '86 4Runner, fuel injected, 4x4. The t-stat went out on me on the highway and caused the engine to overheat which in turn caused the head gasket to let go. I went ahead and pulled everything apart to remove the old head gasket and installed a new one. I got the cylinder head re-surfaced, new water pump, replaced all the gaskets from the cylinder head and up, put new belts, cleaned the intake manifold, and re-assembled everything. It started right up but after running for a few minutes it suddenly died. Went to to restart it and it would turn over but wouldn't fire up. Re-checked all the vacuum hoses and everything of that nature went to start it again and it turned right on. Drove it for a little it started to sputter and died once again. Wouldn't turn right back on, but found the fuel pump wasn't working correctly so I replaced it and the fuel filter. The same problem persisted after this was replaced. Troubleshot a little more and found that the when the egr was put under a vacuum it would cause the engine to sputter (as it should), but when the vacuum was released the engine did not improve. I was just curious if the egr could cause it to sputter somewhat while accelerating and around 2500-3000 rpm? Could it also cause it to not turn back on after it dies? It idles fine, but struggles when put under load. Any input is greatly appreciated!

EGR could do it, but once you remove the vacuum from the egr it should clear up....unless the egr valve is sticking or something....Also did you check the timing? Cam timing was done and checked when you put it together? and you checked the ignition timing with a timing light? I believe it should be at like 5 degrees TDC

I believe it is remaining stuck as it takes a couple taps on the top with the screwdriver and then the engine idles back to normal. The timing may the problem, we have it set at 0 degrees top dead center. I'll adjust the timing first and see if that seems to help, egr's are pretty pricey. Thank you!
