head gasket not blown, melted?
heres what I got 1986 Toyota pick-up, 22rte engine (turbo) 4x4 EFI. We purchased a piece of property which had this truck left by the prevous owner! So have no knowledge of truck except that truck has been sitting for at least four years! initial once over was that engine was seized and standard belts, hoses, wiring harness issues (field mice) so decided to dig a little deeper and pulled engine and head and oil pan and after looking inside heres what I find, turbo needs rebuilt, two or more valves stuck open or possibly bent, but no obvious contact evidence on piston, looking at headgasket it is not only blown but melted, gasket between 3rd and 4th cylinders is missing like it was cut with torch! ive never seen this before! has anyone had this problem or any ideas what may have caused this? my thoughts are warped head or block maybe? here's a pic of gasket and of head! could failing turbo cause this? any help is appreciated! thx craig
p.s. will post pic in a couple of min!

Look closely between the valves thats where the head like to crack.Spray it with brakeclean and wire brush the area between the valves and you will probably find cracks there.good luck.

I would think it more likely to be improperly torqued bolts leading to combustion pressure and gas going where they shouldn't, or a warped head or block as you say. Why would a failing turbo cause that?
Welcome aboard, look forward to seeing progress and completion.

thx guys for replys! I threw in the turbo as it was the only other glaring issue found! as for the stuck or sticking valves will have to wait till complete disassembly to be able to inspect for cracks, bent valves ect. I incorrectly stated that I had never seen this before, but I have in race engines, I should have said I had not in stock engines! I love the look of this model so would love to save her from the crusher! Im assuming that because of the short production run of 22RTE (around 2 yrs I believe) that there was either a precieved or real problem with the design or reliability of this engine! so if that's the case im gonna have to send her to crusher because I live in calif so there is no other option it would have to have the 22RTE in it to pass our smog laws and be tagable! craig
