god-awful gas mileage
1993 4x4 4 cyl 5 speed.
i get horrible gas milage.
it had a rebuild 21k miles ago, it has aftermarket shocks, and larger tires, not like super-swampers, just like meatier truck tires, still road-style.
i know since its a used truck (im the third owner) that i should look into lubrication, changing oil and filters.
what i would like is for someone here with a good knowlege of toyotas to recommend a good list of things to check and change out seeing as its a new truck.
obviously i need to change the oil, its definitlely due for that. i also need a front wheel alignment, those i have covered.
air / oil filter? plugs and wires?
just let me know if you have any suggestions. it would be most appreciated. thanks guys.

Cap, roter, plugs, wires, air filter, fuel filter to start.....
maybe seafoam the engine.
what size tires are on there now? what is your gear ratio? gear ration can be found on the VIN tag on the driver side door jam. your looking for a a G2x2 code in the lower right.

tire pressures, quality of gasoline, do you have a lead foot? city driving?
I wouldn't immediately assume something's wrong with the truck. Most gas mileage issues are related more to environmental issues than mechanical issues. If you had a complete rebuild done 20k ago, they should have put new wires, plugs, and all that other fun stuff in it at the same time. Could probably use an air filter and an oil change, but don't go crazy.
It sounds more to me like you just got a new truck, assumed that since it was a 4 cyl it'd get great gas mileage. I don't know what you consider "horrible" but I really wouldn't expect more than about 20mpg MAX realistically. low tire pressures, a heavy foot, and crappy gas can EASILY drop you 5mpg. Hell, I get almost a 2mpg difference if i fill up at the gas station across the street from my work or the sunoco up the street.
Try adjusting your driving habits and see what you end up with.

I'm getting 19 mpg mixed on a 90 22RE 4WD with 235/75/15 tires and I step on it sometimes, I also have multiple exhaust leaks and a bad 02 sensor
that's at least something you can compare it to since you live in RI and we have the same climate, mileage on your truck would help though...

If you are getting 12 to 15 mpg it could be because your ecu is running in open loop. You can check your timing to see if it is. With the diagnostic jumped it should be at 5deg and when it is not jumped it should be around 10-12deg. If it stays at 5deg when it is not jumped it is running in open loop. Most of the time this will cause a check engine light to come on but not always. In my sig is links to FSMs that have trouble shooting guides that will help you.

Way more info is needed before you do anything in my opinion. As other have stated you need to answer several questions before turning your paycheck over to your local parts store, in order of importance (my opinion of course):
1. Current milage hwy or city or both
2. Size of tires
3. Gear ratio in differentials
Answers to those questions are free and likely will lead to a free answer!
