To my knowledge 84-88 is the first gen…. Someone else might correct me though, i don't own one. Not sure if pre 84' falls into the mini truck category…

Pickups
1st Gen 79-83
2nd Gen 84-88
3rd Gen 89-95

4Runners
1st Gen 84-89
2nd Gen 90-95
3rd Gen 96-?

The 89 4Runner body style was carried on one more year after the 89 pickup body style had already changed to the newer style. 89 pickups and 4Runners looks completely different. A 90 pickup and 4Runner looks similar. That is the reason their generations are different and beside that the runner came out in 84.

The 95 is kind of an odd thing, 94 to the best of my knowledge was a last year of that generation but there is a 95 and half or something like that.

Since yours is a 2 wheel drive, it could be a technically be a 3rd generation since before the 79s, there was the Stout. Generations are refered on by the 4x4 as the start of the generations. Being an 88, myself I would just say I had a 2nd gen truck.
