Gears slipping and Grinding

I have a 1990 Toyota Pick up 2wd 4 speed engine 22RE. My gear would slip out of third. I would hold the gears 1 out 5 times I drove it. two weeks later first gear started to slip and second gear started to grind so I would throw it in third. The next day I couldn't shift into second or third gear since they were grinding, so I just parked it. Don't know much about cars. I can do and oil change and that's about it. Please give me advice tips etc, thanks

So where would I buy a transmission? How do you know that's the problem?

When the transmission does'nt work, its broken and it needs to be repaired, or replaced.
The progression from failure of one gear into failure of multiple gears, makes it likely that no simple repair such as replacement of the shifter seat and bushing, will solve your problems. But you could try.

Wrecking yards often have dead trucks that have good used trannys.

Are you sure its not a 5 speed??

Sounds like it is the transmission. Just wore out. Be cheaper to buy a used transmission. I had a two wheel drive 4 speed an put a 5 speed transmission out of a 83 Celica in it and that bumped my mileage up. A direct fit. Post an ad on Craigslist, check your local salvage yards.

With some very basic tools you can do the job. Buy you a Haynes Manual and it will step you thru it. I was like you, I could only do small things and then with a repair manual, just jumped right in and one thing led to another.

Wow the internet is amazing, I guess they still did use some 4 speed trannys in 1990.

Thanks for reply people. A mechanic came and looked at it and instantly said it was the tranny. so I told him. What if I purchase this one on craigslist and he said it wouldnt work. I didnt ask questions but what do you guys think. The link is below. I have a 22re engine and I have a four speed at the moment. This one is a five speed.
