Gauge swap for one with RPM in a pickup.
My truck doesn't have a RPM gauge, just wondering if I went to the auto wrecker and found one with one can I simply swap it and will everything work? I've seen the same truck with it. I have a 1989 Pickup. Thank you!

Not necessarily! The 80's trucks had harnesses that were wired for every option, not so with the 90's and where yours is the first year of the new body style, you might not have the necessary wiring.
You will have to do some research. On the back of your existing cluster, disconnect the blue connector, with the lock on the top from left to right if your truck has the necessary wiring in the cabin harness there should be a black wire in position #7. Next the igniter if your truck has a tach wire there should be a black wire in position #4 (if V6) position #6 (22-re). If you don't have the necessary wiring or only part of it you can wire it in, but there are other connectors involved.
Also you have an oil light, which is controlled by an oil pressure switch...on/off, the oil pressure gauge in the new cluster requires an oil pressure sender, which is variable. You will have to change the switch for a sender in your engine before you install the cluster or you will burn up the gauge.

You will need the larger Oil Sending Unit or otherwise you will ruin the oil guage in your SR5 Cluster.
If your tach does not work, you will need to run a wire from the negative side of the coil to the "p" on the back of the cluster.
Copied.
I then ran a wire to the negative side of the coil, on a carburator coil it is a little different then a standard coil you are most used to seeing. This truck didnt come with the SR5 guage so I added it. If your truck is not Plug and Play like some are, you need to run a wire from the negative side of the coil to the little "p" to make the tach work.
Then what I did so as not to short out the electrical run beside it. I placed a piece of electrical tape over the little "p" and crimped a wire to the smallest connector that I could find.
I used tape for insulation and to make my connection to the "p".
This is a temporary connection and is on a 22r Motor.
