gas gauge no work

Switched over to an "SR5" gauge in my 87 from what i believe was an 86 4runner. Now my fuel gauge don't work. stays to empty. I know there is at least 3/4 of a tank in there.

Would it be different pinouts, different sender?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks.,

BTW I don't think the truck was prewired for the tach either since that's not working either.

Water temp works, and have the oil sender out for a "real" oil pressure gauge.

I've got the same issue. I've got an 88 SR5 cluster in my 85.

Fuel gauge works great with with the 85 LX cluster, but doesn't work with the SR5.

cluster came out of an auto with 4cyl. gas gauge works with old unit, just swapped back to old one and gas gauge shows 1/2 tank.

Could it be an issue with carb vs efi?

As for the tach, it doesn't move at all. Which leads me to believe I am one of the unlucky ones that isn't prewired and have to run that wire from the tach diag connector to the tach screw.

I'm running a 4-cyl cluster for a 4-cyl engine. There are some differences in the wiring schematic, but after examining them I can't seem to find a fix for the gas gauge. It looks correct to me.

I'll crack it open again when I have a free weekend and hope that a 3rd time of trying will cause the solution to suddenly appear!

My 4runner didn't have the diagnostic port (green plug in the picture) so I ran it to the negative side of the coil (read about it somewhere) and then to the tach connection on the back of the cluster. It worked great for 4 days and then suddenly the truck wouldn't start. After I removed the wire from the coil, it worked great. Adding the wire back caused the truck to stall out. Very odd!

Another task for a weekend

EFI to EFI.

There is a small chance the truck's previous engine was a carb, but that was several owners ago. I'm not really certain, nor do I know how to determine this. Currently it's a 22re.

EDIT: errr... I assumed this was a question to me. Sorry if it was not

According to Autozone my battery and alternator are fine. Gonna take it out and have them test it today again.

Got the cluster pretty much local. Couldn't find the exact one so I had to settle for one out of an auto efi 4runner. Besides $30 was a good deal I thought.
