G54 or W56
i was wanting some opinions on transmission options. My dad found and bought a 87 ex cab 4x4 thats been sitting since 96 in a garage. Its super clean (no rust or body damage) 104,000 miles some which it was pulled behind a motorhome. We got it running, basically needed the old gas out and new fuel in. Only problem we found is that the manual transmission gets hot and binds up after driving around awhile. The little old lady that sold it to him said her husband had it apart a few times and couldnt figure it out. This is a carbd 22r so im assuming it has the stock g54 tranny.
Option 1:Tear apart the g54 in it now and repair.
Option 2:Find a different g54 and install (used going for around $300)
Option 3:Swap w56 in place of g54
I also have several w56s all needing some internal repair (snchronizers and bearings)
Also my dad will mainly putt around in this thing and it will not see much abuse if any at all. As i stated before this truck is super clean and unmolested so i really dont wanna cut the floor any either for shifter locations. I beleive the g and w trannys are same length but shifters may be in different locations???
I plan on getting him a build thread started so you guys can see the truck, i havent been able to find one this nice that hasent been restored.
Any opinions or info would be greatly appreciated!!!

The g54 is the same as the g52 right Cept bearings? If so
You wont have you cut anything only noticable difference will be the size of the shift pattern w56 is a lil smaller then a g52. And t case pattern is a lil farther the the passenger side

R150 is the strongest manual tranny toyota offers on this gen... Driveline and diffs paired with them are stronger too. I think w/ the right bellhousing they'll bolt up to the 22re, but you'll want to verify...

I swapped out my W56 on my 91 22RE 4x4 and put in a G series with matching transfer case by accident (Thought I was putting in another W56)
Bolted right up EXCEPT for the following:
- Rear Transmission Mount was different
- Hangar bearing had to be moved about 2" (Wasn't a big deal)
Other than that it bolted right in
