Freshly Rebuilt 22r No start

I have an 87 4runner of which I blew the out of the motor

I rebuilt an 84 block and head for it and wrapped up putting it in last night. We went to crank it over and couldnt get anything out of it, no pops what so ever. So we flipped the distributor 180 and continued trying and started to get it to start, but it would cut out after two seconds. So we kept messing with timing for an hour and could not get it to run for more than two seconds. Everything is hooked up I believe. It just seems like it will start after charging for a couple minutes, and then loose spark after 2 seconds.

Anyone have any ideas of what I should try?

is it getting fuel? Is the rotor in the correct position at TDC? You said you flipped it 180 .. and said it wants to turn over so leads me to believe its off a tooth or the fuel pump is dead.

That was I had to deal with 2wks ago when I got my rebuilt 22R fired up =)

we dont think it is a timing issue because we have re done it so many times, adjusting it a tooth multiple times.

It is getting fuel, we can hear the fuel pump clicking on and we discovered that I had a broken return line, so after cranking it it spits out fuel on the ground.

you sure its the return line? and check for spark then makes sure all the sparking things are sparking

there is a difference between the 22r from 84 and the 22r from 85>

the vehicle is an 87 4 runner, the fresh longblock is an 84 with the 4 runners EFI manifold on it.

and yes, it is the return line, we traced it up to the engine.

got the AFM plugged in and all the intake ducting connected?

and you didn't answer the question- is the 84 from a 22r or 22re?

maf is all plugged in, and the 84 is a 22r

22re didnt start until 85

What he's saying is that he took a 1984 22R block and replaced the intake manifold with one from a 22RE so that it is now a 22RE of sorts. Or rather a fuel injected 22R. I didn't even know you could do this.

Does it smell like fuel after cranking it? Do you have a spark? Lets assume you have compression.

the cut-out after two seconds could be a few things, but implies the air flow meter contacts aren't actuating the circuit opening relay and keeping the fuel pump running.
have you tried manually powering the fuel pump through the diagnostic connector, or otherwise manually powering it?

no i have not tried hard wiring the pump, or anything like that. Like I said before, I discovered the return line was broken off, so after I stop cranking some gas shoots out the line onto the floor. So I know im getting fuel, but do you still think the maf is playing with the pump and not telling it do the right things?

iv been doing some research and im going to put a jumper on the fuel pump test socket. I think it is the circuit opening relay from my research.

well i got it to stay running, but now my return fuel line is spraying gas at the ground

its broken, but looks rusted to the point of it being like that before i bought it, but i have no idea why it would leak now. im at a loss, this isnt making sense

Did you get it running with the jumper to the fuel pump?
If so, it could be the circuit opening relay or the air flow meter.
If you take a look at the factory service manuals (FSM) in one of the links at the top of this forum / board section, there are troubleshooting procedures you can go through.

as for the fuel line, you may be able to cut and flare it in order to splice a new piece in, or you may be able to go to rubber line. as for why it's spraying, check that the fuel tank is not building up pressure (run the engine with the fuel cap removed for instance) and that the return line is not plugged.
