FJ80 diffs for SAS?
I found a set of front and rear FJ80 diffs at the junkyard, they said $350 each. Are these good for an SAS into an '86 pickup? This is my first Yota project, and first SAS, btw. The engine is in getting cleaned up for a rebuild, but I'm going to be parts gathering for awhile and came across these. Good deal? Anything else from this car that would be good to grab? It has a 3 liter V6, thought it might be a good grab for later.

The front diff is a very common diff swap (see High Pinion) The rear however, is not. It is an 8.8" diff, and you will need the accompanying axle housing to be able to install it.
Also, the FJ-80 is coil sprung so you will need to do some work to get it to fit under your truck.

So that rear isn't any better than the one that's on it? It's a 7.5", I believe. Yeah, I have to lop off all of the mounts etc on the front, for sure. Is there a thread for steering issues and setup somewhere?

you have an 8" rear now. Fj80 with 3.0 V6? pretty sure they had a 4.0 until 93 when they put it to a 4.5 liter, those were inline motors too.

Who knows, man. I'm going off a rearend chart I found on the net, I'll post the link if I can find it again. It says 3.0 on the intake cover, possibly an option? I found the chart. It says 7.5" ring, but whatever, if most guys leave it, then I'm going to assume its strong enough.

Maybe its the expected mpg figure instead of displacement.

Are you reading that about your truck or the cruiser? I'm confused. Is your rig 2wd? Thats the only way you would a 7.5" rear diff on your rig currently. If you are 4wd your front diff is 7.5"., rear is 8".

This is a common practice for smugglers, if it broke down for some reason, or for some reason the vehicle was deemed unrecoverable by the Border Patrol, then the BLM would come and recover it. Another common practice is to put a vehicle together with a mishmash of parts, so that engine either got swapped in, or a remote possiblity that it was a Mexico option only. I'll take a picture when I go pick up that front end, but I really just wanted to know if the rearend off the FJ80 was good and worth $350.

And you're right about the engine, so it must be a swap. All the Wikipedia article lists is a 4.0 L I-6 for that year. I gotta get a picture of this. Some Mexican chop shop put a V-6 in this thing, I swear it.

Does it have an e locker? If so yes. If it has a 3.0, which I believe to be misinformation on windshield (probably meant to be 4.0 by the yard or d-bag that wrote it didn't listen to his boss), it probably wont have e-lockers. I am pretty sure that was only an option in the states on the 94-97 80 series. As we stated before 4.0 ended in 92. From mex, who knows what was done or optioned on the 80.
EDIT: ahahah, yeah take a pic! 3.0 is gutless as it is, I couldn't imagine outrunning the federali's or BP in a 3.0 powered 80!! lol thats why it broke down. It all makes sense now.
