Fixing Ign. bypass, need some wiring help..

Well, im Trying to fix the ignition switch bypass from the PO on my 4runner.. I looked all over the engine bay, and all i could find was the plug pictured below, i tried connecting it to the starter but it did nothing when i tried to start it.. Can anyone confirm if this is the right plug or not?

The loom it comes from..

Do you have any idea why this was done in the first place???

What had failed or been added ??

Was this away to bypass the clutch safety switch or neutral safety switch.

Bottom line your gonna need to know just why this was done so you know what needs to be reconnected or repaired to make it work.:wabbit2:

It might help to know just what year and engine etc your working on.

Honestly, the PO is my gf's grandfather who is a complete drunk, hell, one of the hubs was missing half the hardware inside when I got it, on top of many other oddly missing things.. But he had said that the key wasn't working right so he put a push button in there, so now its just wired straight from the battery to the button to the starter.. He coulda just been too drunk one day to remember to press the clutch switch, but who knows.. Just wanna see if its possible to get it back to working the proper way.. Its an 86 4runner 22re too..

If I can just get a rough understanding of what wire goes to what, I can diagnose what the original problem was, I just need to know what wire initially goes to the starter in the first place..

Red face

It should be the black wire with a single spade connector.

It looks like you had the correct one.

If the ignition switch or clutch safety is bad you will get no voltage .

If the starter is powered by the push button how is the rest of the ignition getting power??

Got it figured out.. Clutch safety switch wasn't fully connected, I got it connected, was a little rough to push and wasn't staying lit, sprayed it out with some elec cleaner, tried starting it again, fired up, but had to have the clutch safety turned on, pushing the clutch in did nothing.. Checked the button down near the clutch pedal, was adjusted all the way in, clutch wasn't even touching it.. Adjusted it, now everything works as it should.. Rewired the button to the horn since its also been broken, and so that I didn't have a gaping hole in my dash from the button.. Everything worked out well, thank you..
