First time owner, couple of questions

Hey all, just picked up a 1995 reg cab 4x4 pickup. 210k. First time owner and this thing has proven itself in the snow we just got in VA! I absolutely love this truck. Anyways, I have just a couple of questions..

I need to replace the rusted out exhaust and want to get a new header as well. I was wondering where to find a good place to buy from online. I will probably have a local shop do the cat-back.

My truck came with 31x10.50x15 tires and the gas mileage is pretty bad and it seems kind of lethargic at highway speeds around 55-65 or whenever it is in OD. Is there anything I can do to get better performance with 31s? If not I guess I'll switch to 235 75 15. Tires need replacing soon which is why I'm asking.

That's all I got for now. Appreciate any insight. Thanks!

There are lots of online vendors for headers. A good place to start is summit racing:

http://www.summitracing.com/search/y...ection/headers

Shop around and compare from there. You didn't say if you had a 4cy or 6cy, hopefully the 4cy as the 6cy headers are $$$.

Only thing really to counteract the sluggishness from larger tires is lower gears or more horse power. Neither path is dramatically going to improve your mpg though. Going down a size may help since you have to replace them anyway.

4runners came stock with 31" tires not sure if trucks did too? Make sure your speedo is showing correct. If 31" is not the stock size any MPG you calculate will be wrong if the speedo/odo isn't reading right.

Thanks for the reply. My truck is a 4 banger 22RE with an automatic transmission. From what I've read these trucks came stock with 225-75-15 tires. I really like the 31s. They look good and got me through some rough spots. This spring I will be rebuilding the engine. It runs good, so to speak, but there is a slight knock on startup and when I put it in 4L you can hear it too. In 2H I dont even notice a knock. I will be ordering parts from engnbldr including a new performance head and the 261 cam. Also will be doing the battery/intake swap. I am thinking about going .020 over with the pistons as well. I imagine all that with header/exhaust will be good for 31s. How are the automatic trannys in these trucks? Reliable?

Did a little research and my truck has the B04A axles which are 4.56 and that with 31s I should use 4.88 because I have the auto trans. I like the auto so I guess I'll go with 30x9.5.

Id do a tune up before anything else and seafoam the engine. Should wake it up a bit. Then I would go to www.rockauto.com and buy a bosal or walker replacement exhaust with new cat. Just did it on my T100 and total cost for the parts was only 350 shipped, I put it on myself too.

Haven't heard too many issues with the tranny's (more than any other automatic I should say). In a 1995 4cy you have the A340F tranny. Autos seem to have the integrated transfer case which can be a power robber. There are limited options to get rid of it but I think inchworm makes an adapter to go to a gear drive case.

Good info on your tranny here:

Marlin Crawler makes good tranny upgrade parts and can build you an awesome tranny if you have the cash.

I have a 91 4wd 22re extended cab with a manual trans 200k miles. 31" tires(door says 225/75r15 but speedo reads correct, checked against GPS), header, no cat, turbo muffler. I get about 17-19mpg on a good day. CEL is on due to no second o2, its a cali truck. and its sluggish in 5th on the highway its just how they are. with an auto woo I can't imagine how bad it is for you.

I had a 22re with 4:30 or 4:10.. Can't remember it got wrote off years ago. But I had 31's and go between 15-19 doing a mix of city and highway. It was actually impressive. However, it had NO power, could not pass on a highway unless you had a seriously long clear stretch. The tranny wouldn't shift properly under heavier throttle but if you let up it would shift. It knocked on startup... To summarize. I LOVED IT! It lasted years until I got rear ended.

So thats my experience. The lack of power is normal for a heavy truck with 31's and 100 horsepower lol.

Thanks for the tranny link. Pretty neat info there.

Yea it's pretty laggy and I only pass people that are going below the speed limit. As long as the road is flat it's not *too* bad lol. Going over the mountain is like hitting a brick wall. My rusty leaky exhaust doesnt help matters. I think I'm going to go down to 30x9.5s. I think it will be a little better with them on and won't look too small. Unless I find a good used set on craigslist I might go with the General Grabber AT2. They look like the BFG TA KO but are a little cheaper. 115 at tirerack instead of 157. I could get 5 for the price of 4 BFGs. Tax return can't get here soon enough! Also going to snag the front winch mount from lce and some parts from Warn to fix my winch so I can finally put it on something.

Red face

I run 235/75/15 tires on all my Toyota`s I like having one size tire on everything.I can`t complain about the performance in the 19" of snow.

I have heard the auto trucks are a little underpowered compared to the manual ones
