First Rig 88 4runner
Hello ALL!!
Figured id get you some pics of my FIRST 4WD
I am a DIE-HARD VW guy 1983 GTI link so this toyota design is NEW to me
I decided I needed a 4wd for camping-atv-snow adventures
I knew that 22re's were the stuff in the longevity department so I found a 1988 4runner with 130K. Got it for $1k and EVERYTHING WORKS!!!!
I do need a few small interior bits....ALL GREY
dome light - passenger dash pad + that SWEET inclinemeter - door handles
I replaced the pitman arm + drag link the 2nd day I had it
removed the rear tail gate trim to clean + lube the rear window regulator
WHO MAKES TRAILER HITCH'S that bolt on??
I have a ton of questions.... I guess thats what search is for

seeing as I am in the rust belt (N.E.Ohio)
there is VERY LITTLE other then the pass rear 1/4....
I am assuming that there are replacement panels???? link to proper fitting parts??
frame/bolt on's/drivetrain are good+clean ..I was rather supprised when I first saw it!!
Looked @ the UHAUL site
$250 for some welded plate+square stock
looks like Ill be spending an afternoon soon the make one (towing 2 king quads)

Welcome. This forum is good for most of your questions. Just to save you some grief from some members (like myself) the "search" function on here is pretty useful for a majority of your questions.

Did plenty of that prior to buying
I am proud to say that I do think I got a good deal a solid truck
All of the little things that I have been "fixing" have gone well
bled the clutch setup + found it made a HUGE improvment in feel/opperation
Replaced a burnt license plate bulb in rear... went OK and found no rott
removed some HACKjob wiring for the radio and rewired with ease
replaced the seals on the front tilt out vent windows
replaced pitman+drag link (wheel was off a bit) realigned pit splines + OK!!!
found broken wire for clutch start cancel in dash harness......2hrs later.......
I still need some parts that I cant find on ebay/marketplace..
LOOKING FOR REAR WIPER ARM for my 88' 4runner NEED THIS BAD!!!
want a new passenger top dash pad (grey) + that tilt meter
dome light (center of roof)
rear view mirror with included dome light
sr5 cloth rear seat headrests

I am from the world of LOW STREET/TRACK CARS
with coil overs and rolled fenders for an extra 1/2"
With that said
I have a few questions about lifting these trucks
I am looking for insite on PROPER lifting methods
First question is this
My new rig has rear axle blocks on the top of axle and below the leaf springs
I am going to assume that this is the INCORRECT way to do this?????!!???
As my parking brake cable is "riding on the leaf" and I know thats NOT right..
I am NOT looking to build what you call a trail rig/rock cwraler
rather a utility/camping/tower for my quad that will go down some trails to get to a camp site/beach/river..
looking to keep some tow gear for the stuck cars in the winter snows
with that said I am looking to do 31" tires
and I dont want a body lift
are there some good 2-3" lifts that are still road worthy?? (quick off sway links??)
that dont make it feel totally top heavy while on the highway

Search ball joint spacers, add-a-leafs, ZUK Coil mod, and extended shackles. Also torsion bar crank, but that only really gives you ride height and makes the ride stiff.
As for the blocks, that sounds like they are in the right place.
You truck should be able to fit 31" tires stock, with little to no pinch weld hammering.

Yea I have looked into a few of the ball joint spacer threads
Also looked into some of the shackle parts
(my shackel bushings are looking RAT) they will be getting replaced anyhow
so that seams to be a good upgrade for me
Was also looking at finding some rear cabin heating upgrades (for the pooch)
2nd heatercore/box would be sweet!!! van styles
Was cruse control an option for sr5 in 88 or 89?? efi??
I would LOVE to swap in some cruze for the highway
Is it possible to swap into some larger front brakes from a later modle??
or t100 maybe even a 2nd/3rd gen runner?
that would be nice for when I get to towing the kingquad!!!!

I have a gray inclometer, and rear wiper arm. If you have a mirror, you just need to add map lights to it. I think I have a map light too. I think some pickups had the mirror with a dome light. But the sr5 4runners came with two map lights.

Nice looking rig!
If you look behind the right front tire (passenger), on the frame, you'll find the chassis code stamped into the side. Should be R--something.

Since you're not looking to clear massive tires, you probably want to stay away from body lifts and the like. Ditch the rear blocks, maybe look into Old Man Emu (OME) rear leaf springs and/or front torsion bars - the rear leafs are good for 1-1.5" lift, so nothing major there., and will definately be a huge improvement over the 20 year springs currently on there.
for the repair manual (FSM) call the dealer parts dept, they should be able to give you an 800 number to call and order one - or keep an eye on half.com, they're not cheap when bought new (3 manuals=1 year: Body, Mechanical, Electrical)

Yes sr5's had X2 lights
that what I am trying to do to mine
map light on the center rear of roof
map light on the rearview mirror mount..

Just a recommendation but one of the best ways to eliminate sag in the rear of our vehicles and gain a little bit of lift, as well as better load capacity is to add some coils in the rear.
Do a search for ZUK coils. I did this to my truck and it was a really really easy upgrade.

I think the frame length is 48 inches wide at the Upull near me they have a bunch of hitches off of all sorts of truck and cars for around 35$ to 50$
