Finally decided on a soft top

After many many months of reading and researching on the many different soft tops out there for the 1st Gen. I was a bit dissatisfied with most of them. It seems like niether of them had all the features I wanted.

The Killer Toy Top was my final decision and I love it. Got a killer deal on it. I have the clear windows but I'm having some newer tinted ones made up from Killer. This thing was made with great attention to detail. One huge factor for me was the ability to use the rear window still.

I really want to have a roof rack but the rails on this unit isn't made for a rack, unlike the Can-Back top. So I've got a guy who is going to try and fabricate something for me. I'll let you guys see it when it's done.

As if my truck didn't get enough stares as it was...soo many people look at my truck and don't seem to really know what it is. A lot of pointing and ohhing and ahhing.... Anyway, on to some quick crappy pics I snapped off today.

Can you post some pics showing how it works with the rear window? Looks great as it is.

What did it cost?

Looks good.

I do like the bikini tops, but i hate the idea of getting caught in a downpour and having the whole truck smell like a wet dog, that's why I like your's.

Do all the windows stow away easily enough that you could put them on in a hurry?

I know there is a HUGE price difference, so we will be starting off with just the bikini top.

Now that is a beautiful truck. If and when I ever get a 1st gen, that's exactly what I would want.

Gorgeous...

Thanks for the compliments guys. I'll take some pics of it with the window sides on tomorrow...it's dark now. The windows go on really fast. I can do both sides in about 2 to 3 minutes.

Seriously though, this top was very well thought out. From the rail system, to the fit and function, to the material that was used. I honestly haven't seen any other tops "in person", but having this Killer Toy Top I can tell you that it's worth it...especially for how much I paid for it.

That was a very good video.

The top looked like it would be a pain to work with but that video proves otherwise.

I guess you bought it from that guy?

I know I've been on their site and the cost is pretty prohibitive at this point especially since our 4runner is a garage queen right now still getting fixed up. So for now, when we are ready, we will probably just get a bikini from The Wabbit.

But the huge advantage to this generation 4runner besides it's 4wheeling prowess is the ability to have the top off.........but with summers around here going from sunny and hot to killer thunderstorms it would be worth the money not to get caught in a soaking rain.

Again, good job!

I see you bought the one on ebay. Welcome to the killer top club. I've had mine over a year, don't think the hard top is going back on any time soon. I ordered mine with the solid sides, but backing out of a parking place at the post office with people flying behind me made me quickly order some new sides with the tinted windows. I think I put the tinted sides on once, I keep this 4runner in the garage and drive on nice days and keep the sides off. I keep the solid sides folded up under a cargo net in case I get caught in rain.

4runnerx3, I saw your trucks picture in one of the other threads and honestly is one of the reasons I bought the Killer Toy Top. I loved how it looked.

Question, do you have a cargo cover for the rear storage area? I remember seeing one made for the first gen but I can't seem to find them anymore. I believe they were made by Wolf? Anyways, when I drive without the side windows on and everything is open I just wanted a cargo cover to cover some of my stuff back there. I've now commissioned my wife to try and make me one. Hope it turns out.

No cargo cover, just a cargo net picked up on ebay, a small one to fit the tie down loops, for a Tiberon I think. There are pics of my 4runner on the Killer Toy web site too. The only problems you'll have with the top, is where to keep the hard top, and left out at night, cats seem to want to sleep on the soft top.

Yeah, funny you mentioned that...I'm actually working on a pulley/strap system (much like 4crawler does here...)

Here's a link to how he does it....

Here's my homemade soft top. I just finished it. It's based on a Can-Back with roof racks.
