new fast way to remove oil pan
so everyone i dont know if some one has posted this yet but i found a fast easy way to take off that oil pan. all you have to do is lift the engine like 2-3 inches and the oil pan will just come out fine. you might have to move it around but its alot faster than dropping the front diff or taking the engine out.

Do the motor mounts flex enough...I can't imagine that. I've never unbolted my motor mounts, how long does that take? Anything else to disconnect? Fan shroud, rad?

^Can use a bottle or floor jack with a 2x4 to lift the engine at the bellhousing. Done it both ways back on ST1, and unbolting the engine mounts is a helluva lot less time consuming than dropping the front diff.
Or just lift it, then no more problemo.

I did that last time I did a timing chain job on mine. I have a body lift on the truck though and without that it wouldn't have worked for me at least.
After removing the diff though and seeing how easy it is, next time I'll just do that.

When I did my T-chain I just removed the idler arm and lowered the steering linkage. This allowed me to drop the pan enough to grab all the broken guide pieces that fell in the pan.

It all depends on which vechicle and engine. You didn't say.... SFA? 22r ? IFS ? they each have their best methods... on my IFS first gen with 22re, its almost impossible to get the pan out unless you remove the front diff... its not THAT hard, and makes it easier to do a good job on your engine work. SFA? Usually there's nothing in your way to hamper dropping the pan.
