Fan tried to exit through the hood-need a part!
Hey All,
I am the original owner of a 1991 4Runner 4wd, 6Cyl Auto. Currently has 226k miles.
A few days ago the fan and fan shroud disintegrated. I figured out that the fan clutch was trashed and must have angled the fan into the shroud. Damage included cutting the upper radiator house, damaging the radiator, busting a hole in the resonator and related hose, and busting a hole in the side of the battery. After replacing all of the above, I realized that the small rubber hose that attaches to the front of the ABS Actuator was also cut.
I am having trouble finding a replacement - help!
The hose contains power steering fluid (return side). It connects to one of the two long, small tubes from the steering box. The ABS Actuator is located just below and next to the battery on the passenger side toward the front.
Thanks in advance.

I've seen those plastic fans trash the hood. Be happy you don't have any paint and body work to do. I've got 220K on my 1995 4Runner and I"m going to go check my fan clutch now!

I had a Flex A Lite Black Magic fan on my truck for a couple of years. Never cooled as well as the factory fan and I always overheated when wheeling. Reverted back to the factory fan and everything was perfect again. See my story on that here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f105...x-165-a-63155/

Hey everybody - thanks for all the posts.
Thanks for the offers of parts - I was gone and my wife actually got a local fabricator to make one for me - $13. She's a keeper.
I have a related question now.
I should have taken pix of the damage, but here is a listing:
1) Radiator punctured
2) Hood bumped from underneath so hard that paint chipped in several spots
3) Fire Blanket under hood thrashed - just pulled it off entirely.
4) Upper and lower radiator hose sliced
5) Air Resonator punched and related hose sliced
6) PS hose way down low attached to ABS Actuator sliced
7) Fan clutch (cause of damage)
8) Plastic fan and fan shroud all over the road
Started up and drove around my 'hood - all appears ok, except PS does not work. No additional physical damage noted, so I believe the cause is that I did not bleed the Brake Actuator where the PS hose connects. Looked at the factory manual and the process (page BR 62 - 63) is beyond my skills.
Anyone familiar with this can give me steps to perform a bleed on this system? The PS pump reservoir still shows full.
Thanks in advance everybody.

Electric Fan Experience
Hey All,
I thought I would give you my experience with electric fans as well.
Back when my 4runner had about 150k miles, I decided that I wanted to reduce some drag on the engine by installed an electric fan (I know, little to gain from this).
Installation was easy and fan operated well, but my experience was that it did not cool the car like the original, big-ass fan and fan shroud.
Now that I live in AZ, the summers are too hot to take chances with this. I removed it and bought an original fan and removed the electric one.
FWIW - thanks.

Here's a pretty good thread about the PS:

I wonder if you need a very large electric fan or a dual fan setup for it to work.
In all honesty, I feel the single best way to keep it all cool is to install a V6 rad in a 22re engine bay. This way not only does it cool a bit more but the electric fan would work better.

Hi MT & Thanks,
I guess that was not a very specific question after all my rambling. I am not really sure what it is I am bleeding, only that the manual says to bleed the ABS Actuator if either the brake lines or PS line are disconnected. Since I only disconnected the PS line, it must be integrated.
Am I making any sense?

I took out the whole ABS system, as you can see in that pic above. It never really did anything anyway, the rear wheels would still lockup with it.
You say the PS doesn't work huh.

Hi MT - tell me a little more about your removal of the ABS system. Maybe I should remove the ABS Actuator entirely and simply bypass the PS return fluid line?
Your picture looks exactly like my system, with the PS fluid coming from the steering gear, passing thru metal lines near the radiator, going into a short but severely bent rubber hose and into the front of the ABS Actuator.
I checked the rubber hoses on the steering side, in case one of them was also cut. None look bad.

There is also the bypassing of the high pressure PS line, which in my case the hose for that was provided by ORS in their 3.4 swap kit.
I mainly wanted the ABS out of the way for this to go in its place:
