So not long after (like a day) after putting in a new AC compressor and converting to R134, this happened, taking out the fan, the shroud, and part of the air box:







So a few questions:

1) Am assuming that at 155,000 miles, not such a bad idea to slap on a new fan clutch. Any recs? (3.0 auto)

2) Am looking for this part of the air filter holder box, as don't need the whole thing (which costs >150.00). But can't find. I suppose the other option is to just ditch it and connect the hoses going in and out, but any idea what this would do to performance, etc?

Holy! I bet that made one heck of a racket.
I'm going out on a limb and say that the fan clutch is the same as the 22re (or similar at least). If it spins freely and the little coil in the front of the fan is fine. Just throw another fan on there.
As for the airbox, find a wrecker. It's gonna be cheaper. Or convert to a cone filter.

you should just get an electic dual fan, you wouldent haveto deal with that anymore, it's give more room and it's works better

Dunno why, but close on heals of new compressor. Maybe a stray piece of something left behind? I did all the work but had a good mechanic put the compressor in. Made a hell of a racket, indeed. The old clutch doesn't look too bad but the thermal coil spring is fairly corroded, so likely not changing with temp as should. While it spins, it seems a bit gelled (tho I don't know how "free" it should be). Re electric fan, hard pressed to a) spend the money and b) the time, and c) worry about more electric connections (spend a lot of time in the water). Working "better" is irrelevant, as the engine runs plenty cool.

I'm kinda new, and don't know -too- much,( enough to tell what's broken most of the time, and even fix it on occasion ) but I -think- that the part that blew up for yer airbox is part of the stuff that get's removed when people do an ISR mod. Please don't quote me, and I'm pulling from my memory... but do some searches, maybe you won't be out anything if you can just ditch em to begin with.

That sucks man. :/ ( Also, sorry if I'm totally, 100% wrong about the ISR suggestion )

The fan clutch is a "fluid coupling".
It's filled with a silicone fluid.
It will feel a little gelled when it's cold. Notice how your fan runs for a little bit when you start up from cold?

Quickpaws you are correct that box goes away during the ISR mod. I tossed all that stuff in the trash when I did mine. It really cleans up that side of the engine bay.

yeah an ISR mod would be a good idea; then you wouldn't have to source a new air box

and I'll second the electric fan swap; no better time than now that is, if you've got the spare change to drop on an electric fan setup

I think the purpose of the little box is to collect debris, but obviously many people get rid of it and do just fine.

technically, the ISR mod is removing the big plastic bulge in line with the intake tube

you can use an AFM adapter to convert over and use a cone style filter and ditch the box, and still keep the stock intake tubing, therefore that "technically" would not be a true ISR mod

Did you figure out why it happened. I do have a spare airbox but you should be able to find one at the wrecker (shiping would be from Canada). Also you can make your own but much smaller. I made one from 2" or 2.5" ABS pipe with barb fittings total length was about 4 - 6" long, worked very well. Same trick on the ISR to the intake tube did not work as well.

Never did decide if removing the box made any difference beside volume

No idea. I am thinking that either just spontaneously crapped out, or maybe during the A/C compressor replacement a bolt got loose (am missing one from a line bracket) and went into the fan, etc.
Thanks for offer of boxes. All I really need is the small trapezoidal box that got busted, but I think I am gonna just bypass it for now and see how it works?

Mostly fixed (just waiting for shroud). In meantime mulling over snorkel vs cheap cold air intake, or neither. Ditching the airbox as shown is definitely louder when hitting the gas...
