Extra Fuel Tank

lets start with i know the traditional place for the extra fuel tank went where the under the 4runner where the spare tire went. I have swing arm tire carrier to do that. So here are the two questions?

1. Has anyone put another 4runner fuel tank on the opposite side of the yota as a spare?
Pros- greater fuel capacity
- weight distribution (in front of rear axle, side to side)
- Mount similar style and with skid plate other side

Cons-weight
- Exhaust relocation(doing a 4.3 swap so have to do that anyway)
- How to fill(transfer pump?, separate fuel door?)

2. Has anyone made a storage area by cutting the floor out to create storage space down to where the under 4runner spare tire was?
Pros-more space
-spare located on rear tire carrier

Cons- in way of exhaust
- weight?

Ok, lets face it cost and time to do it is always a Con. i am looking at doing this, just trying to get a better idea. I already have the extra fuel tank from old truck so why not.

If you are just going to flame this MOVE ON. I would like some thought on how to make it work.

do it and graft a fuel door from a newer one on the other side, that would be sweet and traveling 600 miles on a fill up

If I were doing it, I would use the fuel pump from one tank to fill the other tank and operate it via a switch on the dash. Also, I think a simple pipe from one tank to the other would work for filling, but not transfer. When you "run out of gas" simply turn on the other fuel pump and keep driving!

This would keep the fuel line routing simpler since you are still only using one fuel pump and one set of lines.

Best way? 2 tanks, 2 pumps, 2 fill necks, 2 tank sensors, 1 toggle switch.

Wire the toggle switch so it toggles BOTH the pump AND the sensor.

ideas till i get home

I like the ideas.
Here is what I have decided. I am going do try and make this work, twin tanks.
I am swapping a 4.3 chev into the yota. I have the fuel pump for the 4.3. it came with the engine. The toyota pumps may not work for supplying the 4.3.
that leaves me with 2 extra pumps.

I agree with it may just be easier to plumb in a fuel door and fill line.
I will see what may or may not be in the way of plumbing in the fuel door and fill line.

Why not adjust one and transfer it to other tank as the fill hole will be on the wrong side of the tank now. Then use the chevy fuel pump to supply the engine and the 2 toyota's to transfer the fuel between tanks??

I do like the toggle switch idea to transfer fuel but would like sensors always on.

trying to find a transfer pump high volume low pressure incase one idea turns out better than another.

i will keep you updated. Out at work for a couple weeks so just getting ideas together till i get home.
