exhaust pro

Looking for some info on a exhaust rebuild looking for better fuel milage, don't want loud and cackle (I'm passed those years)

I got a welder and will do it myself but not sure of what to do as far as pipe, cat, and muffler.

As you can see the exhaust is very shabby and I'm sure the o2 censor isn't working I haven't pulled codes but my check engine light is always on and the truck runs sluggish

Any advice would be awesome

If it was me I would just get a full bolt on system from rockauto if you want it to sound factory. otherwise buy a quite muffler, higher end cat, and some pipe.If you go that route you will need to either save the o2 bung or get a new one. either route will run a couple hundred dollars.

For your original question. It might be easier and cheaper to go to an exhaust shop and have new exhaust put on. Biggest thing your going to pay for is a new cat (if you decide to keep it) FWIW exhaust shops are not suppose to remove cats but if it happens to "fall off" on the way there they can install pipes in place of them if your state doesn't have emissions testing.

Ya that did cross my mind also. As of now nebraska doesn't have any emission laws but I do belive the shops still abide by the rules, like you said they will not cut them out but Where's my truck don't have a cat on it in not sure if they'll have to sell me one.

I was under the impression that you have to have a cat for the o2 censors but now that I found out you don't I won't put one back on,
So I guess some pre bent pipe and a muffler 12 pack and a buddy to hold my pipe eh...

Any pics of other people's exhaust builds would be great

You can get a full brand new exhaust on ebay for about $100 for each section. Add in a cheap cat or just test pipe and you're right at around $250 for a stock, quiet system. That's what i'll be doing.

at that price i'm guessing you can also have a local exhaust shop do a custom exhaust for about $200 excl a new CAT. That's about what I paid for my exhaust and I'm in CA where everything is more expensive. I also bought a CA legal CAT though and had a few o2 bungs welded on for $500 otd. Sure the stock exhaust will work great, and is a very simple bolt-on solution -- but if you're already paying for exhaust work you might as well get a slight upgrade, right? Also, with custom exhaust you have the option to tuck things up higher for clearance.

I went with 2" pipe welded onto the downpipe/Y-pipe about where your feet are at (22re engine), then went with a 2" free-flow CAT, followed by 2.25" the rest of the way out with a free-flowing turbo-style muffler. I also had the guy tuck the exhaust up a little closer to the body so I had more clearance for a future skid plate, more room at rear axle/triangulated shocks, routed out stock location so it looks stock. Gained a slight bit of HP from the seat of the pants, perhaps 1mpg gain, sound is slightly deeper but still very quiet and almost stock sounding.

If you choose to do it all yourself with your own pipe and bends, just make sure you pay attention to keeping your o2 sensor bung in the same location. You'll either need a new bung or harvest the old one off the stock exhaust. I'd recommend replacing the sensor while you're in there - you can find them fairly cheap if you look, make sure it's a Denso/OEM not something like a Bosch.

Good luck!

You've passed the point where it matters, which is the collector at the bottom of the exhaust manifold, so you could probably swedge from the stock size up to 2" / 2.25" prior to the converter's inlet.

Well I will take your guys advice and go get a bid to get er done professionaly. And see what they say. I do like the idea of going to 2.25 pipe so them I will need a different test tube, then I like the idea of tucking it up higher into the frame not that I do allot of mudding or wheeling, but more for cosmetics looks.

She kinda a pavement princesse. But she has thrown gravel maybe once going to the lake
