Exhaust help...Muffler Options

After searching and searching with the search function I'm still unsure of what I should possibly install on my truck for a cat back exhaust system.

I currently use the stock exhaust manifold, a "test pipe" (no CAT) and a Dynomax Super Turbo muffler (the one made for 4Runner's).

I plan to install and LCE Street Header Kit. I plan to still use the test pipe but I need a replacement muffler as I will increase the pipe size. It looks like 2.25" is the popular choice for the 22RE.

Here's the deal, the tone of my Dynomax is nice and it flows much better then stock. This is all I have to compare too, not sure what a Flowmaster Delta 50 or Magnaflow sounds like in person.

A little louder tone then my Dynomax would be nice if possible and obviously more flow and feel-able power. I really would like a nice tone coming out the tailpipe.

What I don't want is super loud inside the cabin, my 22RE sounding like a V8 or sounding like a pathetic oversize bumble bee/4-cylinder trying to sound cool, etc, etc.

Are Magnaflow's on the louder side? I read a thread from a very popular and influential member on here who runs a Summit Racing Turbo muffler. His Magnaflow was apparently too loud for him and I'm assuming he likes his Summit. I like them because of the price. Anybody else running Summit mufflers? Do you like them?

Any suggestions and experiences? Thanks.

Im not 100% sure of the brand, but i put a glass pack muffler on my brother's 94 22RE 2WD, and it gave it a nice throaty sound, and it's not too loud. we were also looking to keep the sound level in the cab down, and i think it's pretty low. on the otherside, i had downey headers, a hollow cat and a Doug thorley cat back on my old 3.0, and it was loud as hell in the cab. like i said, i dont remember the brand, but he paid about $25 for it on summit.

Does inlet and outlet location matter?

inlet / outlet location matters. as that is where your exhaust piping will go. the inlet/outlet dont change the sound or anything, its just where you want to weld your tail pipe into at. but what kind of tone are you looking for? I can guarantee with headers, a test pipe and turbo muffler its gonna be loud...

heres what it sounds like on a v6

this is the muffler we have on my brother's 22RE. In retrospect, i wish we would have gone with a 2.25 system instead of 2.5.

a glasspack with that set up will be pretty dang loud. a friend of mine had a magnaflow and you couldn't tell the difference between stock. if your looking for flow don't get a flowmaster they flow like crap. That borla like mak has is pretty nice and everyone talks about how well they flow.

You're right, with headers and essentially a straight pipe it will be louder so I will have to expect that. A mild, respectable tone is what I'm looking for. I do plan on 2.25" piping, that Flowtech looks like it could be loud because of it's casing size. What a great price though. It's so cheap if I didn't like it it could be easily replaced.

if your looking at cheap try a thrush glasspack or thrush welded. the thrush glasspacks are much quieter than cherrybombs are flowtech but still got some noise. the thrush welded is exactly like a flowmaster but only 30 bucks. you can get them from advance auto. im running straight pipes and its extremely loud so thats a no go. lol

Found this link for mufflers, seems like good prices, free shipping and you can give your best offer. I might consider Thrush, I like the prices.

My glasspack gets a little loud. Cam, DT header, hiflow cat, glasspack, 2.25 pipe out. Must time I like it though. Just loud when revved up. Sounds awesome on interstate when driving next to road divider.

I heard a 22re straight piped with no cat into a flowmaster 40 series. Honestly, it sounded like an angry bumble bee... maybe it would sound better with a tail pipe.

I have a magnaflow with 2.25 pipes. Its a little loud and kind of droney, but not super bad.I will probably go with dynomax next.I find the drone annoying at times.Wouldnt mind less tone at idle either.I think anything with some packing inside would be quieter than a magnaflow.I would aslo use 2 inch pipe if I were going to build a new exhaust, maybe a little quieter.

I just listened to my friends 2000 2.4L Tacoma lst night, he just installed LCE headers, 2.5" piping and a Flowmaster Delta 40 muffler. Although it sounds good at idle it's a bit loud for me on the road. I could here him coming from a mile away. I definitely doesn't sound like a 4-banger anymore either.

I talked to the owner of the exhaust shop he went to, he told me that usually for 4-bangers he installs 14" muffler cases and if I want it on the quiet side I could go with a Dynomax Super Turbo or a larger 20" muffler case.

I'll try the headers first since I already have a Dynomax Super Turbo and I'll go from there. So many options to choose from....

I bought a 2 1/4" Dynomax Super Turbo from Jegs for 53 bucks a few months back. I test fitted it quick (hoping to take it into the shop this week to get it setup) and I thought it sounded pretty good for a 4 cyl.

This is quite true. That or a 5.9 Cummins with exhaust.
