erratic idle, timing codes 52 and 22

Hey fellas, I've searched but maybe I'm just not getting it.

I'm chasing a high idle even with the idle adjustment screw all the way bottomed out.

I'm throwing codes 52 and 22

With my timing as retarded as I can go, it bounces between 5 and 0 and the idle bounces between 850 and 925. Would a sloppy timing belt do this?

gas mileage is beyond terrible, and I am sure there are wiring issues because the truck is a wiring disaster under the hood. However, everything does seem to be there.

it's an 88 4runner 3vze

any help would be appreciated. Just looking to get it smogged and registered before I pull the motor and rebuild it.

Hmmm.

Why would you bother "chasing a high idle" when the computer is telling you that there is a malfunction? (MIL: Malfunction Indicator Light) Obviously, you're not going to get it smogged (or registered) with those problems, no matter what your idle (or mileage) is doing.

I would deal with those problems first, given that you can't drive it otherwise.

Just out of curiosity, why do you plan to rebuild it? Is there something wrong with the engine itself?

I guess I should clarify, I am looking to fix the problems. I was just stating the symptoms to see if they could help the diagnosis.

no reason for a rebuild, but this is my hunting/wheeling truck. I'm going to do as much of a full restoration on it as I can, and the motor will be the first item. It's had a rough life down south, so even if I get it running good now, I'm going to rebuild it before I get stuck 800 miles from home

I dont know the 3.0 but the codes might help someone else that knows these motors. Fixing the codes can only help.

22....Water Temp Sensor Signal. I would atleast clean the sensor.

52... Knock Sensor Signal. Seems like I hear the cable is the biggest problem.

Yes and Yes (or they could be masking the real problem).

But either one will keep you from registering the vehicle, and in Calif. at least they'll keep you from even selling the vehicle. So unless you have some idea that the rest of the truck is complete junk (and therefore not worth fixing the codes), you have to fix those two problems sooner or later. And since these are the problems you know, trying to fix something else first is probably not a good use of your time.

I'm definitely not junking the truck. I just got it, and I'm just starting the process of getting it running and fixed. Obviously I need to smog it to finish the registration (I can drive around on a temp forever, LOL)

I'm asking if these specifically would cause how it is acting more out of curiosity and to help keep my mind on track of these issues. If the answer was "no these wont do that at all" then I would still keep an eye out for other issues. I'll start on getting these two fixed first then continue from there.
