I think it may work. I am doing something similar but from an older truck into a newer one. My only experience is with an I4 pickup.
Right now I am swapping in a 91 pickup 22re engine + auto transmission into a 94 pickup. I noticed that the 91 transmission has a mechanical speedometer cable and the 94 has an electronic speedometer sensor, other than that I think that the rest is swappable. I'll know if my truck runs correctly in the next couple of days when I finish the swap. I bought the 91 engine and transmission (and ECU just in case) for cheap to replace a cracked engine and non functioning auto transmission.

The longblock should drop right in.
Things like sensors, distributor, intake, exhaust and everything should swap from the old engine to the new, and bolt up to the longblock without issue.

After my swap of a 91 22re and auto transmission (a43d) into a 94 toyota pickup extended cab, I noticed some small differences. The plug for the distributor is different, the O2 sensor plug near the cat converter is different and the speedometer cable/sensor thing. Other than these differences, the truck runs ok. I also am using the ECU from the 94 pickup.

it might be slightly different if i was you id check out the one your going to replace it with and look it over good. Or call your dealership and ask them or maybe a Yota 4 wheel shop? idk they should bolt right in but toyota makes SLIGHT differences between years sometimes so it might be fine it might not. You can alwasy just try haha.
