engine swap options
well my 22re has abt had it so im gonna put a new engine in it, what engine is still the question im trying to answer. i'd like to get a bit more power and at the same time better gas mileage, so i was thinking diesel, but im keeping my mind open. any suggestions are appreciated, and if u know what it takes to swap (fab, wiring, misc parts) then that would be exceptional. also i don't mind changing the transmission, i was planning on buying a engine and tranny still together anyway. oh yeah, its an 86 4unner. thanks for any input.

I don't think anything shares motor mounts with the 22RE (like the 3.0 and 3.4 do), so you're looking at some custom fab. There are a lot of swap threads on here - here's some options I've seen:
- 1.9L VW TDI
- Toyota 2JZ (Supra)
- Toyota 7MGTE (Supra)
- Toyota 5VZFE (Tacoma/4Runner/T100)
- Toyota 2RZ/3RZ (Tacoma/4Runner)
- Small block chevy
- Lexus 1UZ V8
So, pretty much whatever you can dream up ...

There is one motor that will bolt up to your tranny and the motor mounts. Its called the 2LT or 2LTE. This is a 2.4L TD Toyota motor. They were sold in NA in the 80s but the newer ones need to be gotten from Japan. If you go the 2LTE route you will need to do some wiring as it is a fuel injected motor somewhat similar to the 3.0L TD I've got in my 92. Go to www.toyotadiesel.com and do some reading. Lots of swaps there. That would be your bolt in diesel option.
