Engine "ping"

Took off my timing cover thinking the chain needed to be replaced. It didnt but after putting it back together there is a sort of "ping" sound seems to be coming from somewhere close to the crank. Its not the valves or injectors. Its like a metal on metal kinda like two spoons hitting each other. It start when i fire it up and doesnt stop till the engine is off. 22re, any ideas what it could be?

Valve cover over tightend? Are you guessing at the origin of the sound or did you put the stethoscope to the engine?

Well if you had a reason to think the chain or guides were due you probably had the noise to begin with yeah?

Tune up/routine maintenence proceedures, idle&timing check and adjustments, valve adjustment, and make sure the cover isn't too tight.

Also belt tension, not a good idea to just guess at these.

Also right tools for the job, eg stethoscope or hillbilly stethoscope(long screw driver, or big stick..) so you know what is actually makeing the noise or have a better idea of where it is coming from.

I timed it. I took the timing cover off along with the oil pump. The rubber oil pump "O" ring had gotten between the housing and the outer gear. Any way that could have been it?

Over torqued oil pump or water pump flexed the cover and caused a chain rub? Just guessing of course.

Did you find any other signs of rubbing/contact?

Don't recall if that seal has a metal flange(Pretty sure it doesnt), but if it was sleeved that could of been it. Would expect a good constant sound, like baseball card in spokes ya know? Erm wrong seal

Yep think you found it slightly crooked oil pump. Should be some wear marks on the side opposite of the pinched gasket/o-ring.

After replacing the oil pump O ring the "pinging" went away. I guess the O ring being bound in with the pump gears cause them to make noise as they rotated.
