Anyone ever replace an E-brake cable on an 1987 pickup or something similar? I've tried all the local car shops and no one can order one in for me because they are "discontinued". I can get them from the dealership but they are $125 a pop and I need 3 of them. I was hoping maybe to find one online? Anyone know a site? Ebay's got nothing

I got one for my 90 at advance auto parts for ~$35. They only listed for 2wd, still worked on my 4wd.

salvage yard.. make sure u get the right configuration, 4 dr 4 runner, 2 dr 4 runner, regular cab, exta cab, long bed short bed all have different lengths. Depending on front and rear sections also. My cousin knows about it because I gave him the wrong type once but then found the right one and he swapped it again. The front section may be a little tricky pulling, been awhile since i've done it so don't remember exactly whats involved. rear sections an easy swap.

That sucks, maybe your best bet would be a junk yard or maybe online somewhere?

So, they just charge you a lot more in Canada then I suppose?

The 2wd xtra cab e-brake setup is different from the 4wd xtra cab e-brake setup.
I've been to Pick and Pull looking for a good e-brake cable. I've looked at many.
The only one that is interchangeable (as far as I know) is the 4wd 4Runner front cable to the 4wd xtracab front cable.

We don't have Advance Auto Parts in Canada and they don't ship here either. I like www.car-part.com however I cannot seem to to find "emergency brake cable" or anything of the sort under the list of parts. I'll be calling around to some salvage yards today

I dunno if rockauto.com ships to canada, but they have them listed as "Parking Brake Cable". In their listing I haven't seen the front cable though, but if you can get the rear two then at least you are closer to having them all.

I bought mine from rockauto, cost about $130 for all three plus shipping to Canada. They should stock them for both 2wd and 4wd.

hmm.. yes they seem to have many for the 2WD, only one I'm seeing for the 4WD. It's cheap though, I may order it. Thanks for the website!

I think I must have changed 6 of those in the last few years.

I know this is an older thread; but I was wondering if anyone has any sources for these cables.

I recently got my 1987 pickup, standard cab, 4wd, and it's generally in fantastic mechanical condition; but the front e-brake cable is broken. I'm learning a lot about this truck from tinkering with it and reading threads on here; but I'm having a ridiculously hard time finding this cable!

I've done a fair bit of searching in the forum here, and haven't found anything current I can use to try to track this down, and I've searched quite a few parts sites trying to find it as well.

I'm racking my brain at this point trying to come up with an option, will any other cables fit it? It sounds like the length difference between the various models makes this unlikely; but I'm running out of ideas at this point.

Alternatively, is there a chance that a longer cable could be adjusted to fit? Or even a possibility that a cable could be made?

The important end is where it connects to the handle in the cab

The other end where it connects to the intermediate lever can be added to with some cable and clamps from any hardware store

I have not really explored this but one of the cables off a newer truck might even work.

Not sure if the dealerstill has any of these left.

*nods* The handle connection is exactly where it's broken unfortunately...

I've gone through Rock Auto, and while they have a plentiful selection of 2wd front cables, and 4wd rear cables, I wasn't able to find any of the elusive 4wd front cable

I'll be out near the dealership tomorrow, I may go ahead and stop by to ask them at this point

Remove the one you have and measure it. only way to make sure you get the correct one. It only took me an hour to replace both sections on mine and that includes the time to look how to do it on youtube.

Just got done installing the cable a few minutes ago. Wound up going to the dealership, and paying $90 for the part...

In any case, it's one more item off my list of things to do, and a fun learning experience!

there's places that can build cables as i remember from my atv tech days. something like cables r us, but i don't remember exactly. they literally fabricate what you need, might have to send in the sheethe first....... just for the next guy whom comes across this thread. you never know, your expensive cables might be built by a house that does it for you for 1/3 the price directly.
