To EGR or not to EGR, that is the question...
Doing a full rebuild on my 22RE, got ~155k on the original EGR. Should I just replace it, or is it worth salvaging???
I know there's no crystal ball to look into, just wanting opinions.

Lots of threads on that darn EGR out there. If it was me I'd leave it on but block it off. Mine is blocked off and I passed Albuquerque emissions with flying colors.

I live in lovely California, where we have strict laws about smog, and pay $4.50+ per gallon to produce it. Not wanting to eliminate it, just wondering what the life span of said part is.

Squeaky clean the EGR passages that go through the head. You really should remove the rear plate on the back of the head and do some cleaning through there as well and replace the gasket while it's easy to get to.

Good advice there from 84sr5yoty!
To answer your question: They last as long as they last. Don't waste your money. If the old one looks good, use it. It's not too much of an operation to replace it later.
Clean those passages!

egr, when operating properly, lowers combustion temps and means lower octane fuel can be used. that means more ignition advance can be used which can mean better fuel economy.
not to mention that lower NOx emissions (nitric oxide, et al.) results in less probablility of acid rain, but more likelyhood of higher CO2 emissions.
so... your choice.
FYI... NOx IS NOT nitrous oxide- that's N2O

Hey Abe,
You forgot to mention that it also reduces pumping losses, the higher the volume of exaust gas allowed thru valve and passages, the higher the gain.
It's positive pressure, not much, 1.5psi max, but still positive.
I'm actually experimenting with 2 EGR valves on My motor.
Thanks, Kiwi

To the credit of the OP; he was not proposing ditching his EGR, he just pondered whether to renovate or replace the EGR valve. A frugal, if not green, motive.
All good comments, though.

Not to spite anyone above, just want the EGR to work so I don't have to worry about it. I think they're a wash in what they try to accomplish in emissions. I JUST WANT THE SMOGINATORS TO LEAVE ME ALONE, IS THAT SO WWWWRRRRRRRONGGG????
