EGR modulator filter
This might be able to go in the general vehicle forum, but this is more specific to the 22re (though any EGR modulator will apply)
There's a filter inside of the EGR modulator. It's a flat and round filter. It's a pretty hard part to find. Might get one from a dealer, but I was wondering if a cotton ball would work just as well. You can pull and spread the single cotton ball to the diameter of the modulator. Will the be safe to use?
I've seen someone online use a filter to a face mask for the EGR mod filter. It was the same material. But why wouldn't cotton work?

What about cotton cloth? Like an old t- sleeve cut in the same sized circle?
This thread is more of me trying to guage what will work as a filter and what won't. I know I can pick up the filter at the dealer, but I'm curious how such a simple thing can be so proprietary.

I kinda think all those things are rediculous to have on the 22re... why didn't Toyota just link them all together with a one-way check valve on each, and direct it to the intake before the TB?
hmmm, that gives me an idea
be good for water proofing anyway
there's 2 on the top of my valve cover, with AC, and the AC one has already been completely replaced once

The manual says just to clean it with compressed air. Is yours beyond cleaning?
I would worry that anything else you might use would have too much, or too little permeability, leading to the EGR opening too much or too little.

So while tracking down the causes for my EGR codes, I decided to recheck on the EGR modulator again. I popped the top off to get to the filter and it was fill of water. Filter was wet.
Sometime during my time working on the truck, I lost the filter. So I'm looking for a temporary replacement, and the best I can find is a makeup removal pad (not mine, lol) It's cotton, but should work.
Is the original filter a deal item?

My vacuum modulator is not working. It is getting vacuum to it and is getting back pressure from the exhaust, but is not sending any vacuum to the EGR valve. There was water in the back pressure port when I took it off yesterday. The water got in there when the head gasket blew on the passenger side.
Anywhoo...I have a new one from the auto parts store that is going in today. The filter out of my old one is a little stained from soot but I am sure it will still work fine. If anyone would like the filter out of my old modulator, I can drop it in the mail to you. Motor is a 3vze. Not sure if the modulator is the same as the 22r one.

Could there be water in the filter from when I dumped about half a gallon of water on the intake manifold to find a vacuum leak? It doesnt smell, feel, or look like coolant, but it still could be.
