Egads! Motor may be out? engine started running hot

Today while heading down the highway to go check out a few trails a friend had heard about, the engine started running hot. It has a tendency to do that from time to time. Not overheating, just putting the needle just above half way.

Well, thinking nothing of it, I decided to keep on rolling. Just to find out that the motor was making a chattering sound when I shifted, Only when I was changing the gears. The sound would go away once I had the clutch all the way out or all the way in.

Motor still running on the warm side mind you. Usually by now she would have come down to normal.

Thats when the lack of power came in. While climbing into a hill I can usually take in 5th, I noticed her slowing down significantly. So clutch, chatter chatter, 4th gear, chatter chatter, release clutch. Still no go. Clutch chatter chatter, 3rd, chatter. Still no go.

At this point, asking my friend with me if he had noticed it, and pulling over. Steam shooting out of the motor and she stalls. Let her sit and cool for about 15 mins. Add coolant. Continue, take an exit...over heating again. Park her for 30 mins now. Waiting, check the coolant...fine. Start her up and hit the highway on the way back. Lot's of noise now, rapid overheating. Loud knocking(please don't be a rod). Get AAA over and tow her home. Didnt want to take the chances.

Now she starts, knocks like heck. Won't stay running unless your on the gas. Knocks. Loudly. Pulled VC and all the valves are holding tension. Timing chain is flappy but only on the driver side.

I need a motor don't I?

Did you check the oil level? Sounds like you need a new engine to me. Wouldn't bother rebuilding it as you can get a used engine for less than the rebuild supplies. Expect to pay $200-500 for a decent used motor. Do the install yourself, and it'll set you back less than $1000.

Yea oil level was mint. And rebuilding is a time thing I just don't have at the moment.

The boneyard I usually go to has about 8 22re's sitting in the shop already pulled, its actually kind of ironic that I didn't notice them there till yesterday morning...4 hours before I killed mine, and I go there once a week.

Is there any specific year I should be looking for? I know with the Jeep 4.0 there were subtle changes throughout the years with output and longevity.

Is any one year 22re better than another. I saw atleast 1 86 and probably 2 87's among the engines on the shelf. Any ideas? Or a link with the stats to each year?

Just got a new job and now all the proceeds go into the truck, lol. It's never boring atleast...

You can use a 22re block pre 85 all the way to 95. The only differences you will have to use your old intake manifold and and electrical wiring harness.
The injectors harness and all the connectors changed on toyota trucks and 4 runners from 1988 and up.
I have a 91 22re block in my 86 currently I picked up for $200.
Make sure you check out your boneyard block well.
It would probably be a good idea to pull the oil pan check for rod end play and do the timing chain on the donor block as well.
It's a day's work good luck.

actually only 81, the first year for 22rs, had dual row TCs. try to get it the closest to your year as possible. There are subtle differences between the years. Connectors and what not. Somewhere in the late '80s, the injectors were different than the earlier ones.

Sorry to hear about the motor I bet you coulda made it home though

So it's been what? a month and a half, and the nearest motor I can find is 3 states away and they want almost a grand for it. At this point I'm thinking just get on Ebay and grab one with 0 miles for 1.5k.
