Dual Battery setup in 1st gen. 4runner ???

I searched and didn't find any 1st gen 4runners dual battery setups. Has anyone done this mod? If so lets see some pics. Or is there just not enough room under the hood for a second battery? Thanks!

OK! I read that thread, and it sounds like its possible to mount the second battery right next to the existing battery? Just need to fab up a bracket for the two batteries. So who's done this and do you have any suggestions.

Hey Steve,
Well, I really haven't looked into it, since the runner was stolen and came back without my winch and lights.

Why do you need dual batteries? An Odyssey battery is about twice as powerful as an Optima or other gel type battery for about the same size. This would be an easier modification even if not any cheaper.

I am wondering the same thing, what is your reasoning for wanting a dual battery setup?

If you are using drain accessories like a winch and aux lights, switch to a deep cell that can take the long drain and recover.

For me personally, I do a couple week long expeditions during the year and like the peace of mind knowing that I have resources available to me to do almost anything. Meaning, that if I need to run my ham radio for a couple days straight I can, or if I need to leave my lights on for a recovery I won't worry about starting it back up, or if I need to run my inverter to power some tools I can do that as well.

I had a Yellow Top for a few years and served me well, but there were still a few times I drained it. I do carry a small jumper pack now that I charge before trips, but I'd just like to know I have the power there when I need it.

To each his own.

Oh, and I've also had an alternator poop out on me during a trip... leaving me stranded late into the night away from cell coverage and we couldn't find anybody on the radio to call for us.

We ended up flagging down the first car that came by a few hours later and gave them a note with details and they called it in for us. Again, I don't like be stranded with no options. At least with a backup battery, I could have continued on closer to inhabited areas. I now carry a spare alternator.
