Drivetrain vibration question
I have an 88 4runner, and can't figure what is causing the vibration I am getting. I am getting a vibration when I am accelerating, basically when I am sending power through the drivetrain. I feel it most in first and second, when I am taking off from a stop. It feels like a vibration that is matching up with the rotation of the driveshaft. The instant I push in the clutch, and coast, the vibration disapears, and is is smooth. I changed the rear u-joint, and the front ones are tight. There doesn't seem to be any play in the pinion either. Any ideas what to check next?

Try checking the front and rear wheel bearings, i had to replace the rear wheel bearing on my 4Runner a few months ago, they were so bad that i could wiggle the center part of the bearing almost a 1/4'' , and when the solid axle was put in the front i rebuilt it also with all new bearings and seals.

O.K. I climbed under the Runner once again shaking around on stuff. Every joint in the driveshaft is tight. I grabbed on the drive shaft in the middle where the two halves slide on the splines. I wiggled it, and there is a slight amount of play side to side in the drive shaft slip splines themselves. Not much but a tiny bit. Could this be causing some of the vibration? Like I said, it is only really felt under a load as slow speeds, 1st and 2nd when I get the vibration. When the clutch is pushed in it is smooth.

Sounds like it's probably your clutch slipping, Jumping and Chattering. . .
I believe Fillsrunner4 is suggesting your clutch may have Oil on it. If your rear main and/or transmission front seal are shot.
If you think it's in the rear driveline, take it out. Put the truck in 4hi and drive the truck in "fwd." If You still have the issue, you've eliminated the rear driveline and u-joints.
Keep us posted.
Good Luck,
Grant

No leaking comming from the bell housing area, and the transfercase bearing seems tight.
As for th pinion angle, I have a 4 inch lift, and there is I think about a 3- 3.5 inch block in the back, that is tapered, BUT my springs are friggin' sagged flat. I bet my rear is probably only 1 or so inchs above stock height. Could be casusing the pinion angle to pint up to much. Visually though it does not look out of whack.
