Drewski's '88 build

Hey all, just picked up a new project yesterday. I have some plans for it so I figured I would document them here. Generally I'm just going to fix it up into another great daily driver like my '94 and then give one of the two to my dad. Anyway, enough talk.

Got the truck in Goshen so Julie and I stopped at Iechy Da for beer and food on the way outta town:

That's a fiberglass bed on there which pays the price of admission itself and then some!

Extra glass:

Here's why she was so cheap (and why I bought it!). Popped HG, the PO didn't want to deal with it.

Extra parts lugged home in my '94:

Extra locking hubs, two intake manifolds, valve covers, good radiator, wiring harness's, two sets of front axles, both driveshafts, alternator, intake box and more.

So that's what I got, all for $900. I'm pretty happy, now I just gotta
I get to decide whether on not to go RV head/cam or stay stock. I stayed stock on my '94 so I suspect I'll hop this one up a bit but we'll see as I get into things.

Thanks, should be a good time. Grabbed a battery for it today and stocked up on PB Blaster and brake parts cleaner, I hope to pull some parts tomorrow after work.

Its a bummer about the rust on the front fender. As an owner of a 88 with a rust problem I feel your pain. However mine is a bed rust problem so like you said that fiberglass is worth its weight in gold!

nice score man! extra part are always nice to have. If you want to get yourself some new fiberglass fenders check out toyotafiberglass.com 4x4 his name is Cory, he is based in Penticton BC but does amazing work for our yotas. He has 2 suppliers in the states. 3D Off Road solutions on the western side of the USA and JIST Auto on the eastern side.

Got a bit done today as far as disassembly. Pulled the upper and lower intake, exhaust manifold and valvetrain.

Since the headgasket blew awhile ago everything seems pretty crusty and the engine hasn't turned over yet for me! I didn't really try very hard but I threw a 19mm on the crank bolt to see if I could break it free by hand. I expected the engine to just turn over but nothing's moving so I'm going to try a breaker bar with a pipe tomorrow. I want to make sure the engine is nice and free then I'll plan to bump the starter to free up the crank bolt. At this point I really doubt the engine is frozen but if it is I'll just wind up doing more rebuilding than I originally planned.

Work got cut a little short today though, a friend came by with his bike and needed a little carb work done then my wife and I went out dirt biking. I'll try to post pics tomorrow, the cam certainly has some wear! I knew that from the beginning though, RV cam has been the unofficial plan since I bought it.

I did get one photo though, plus one for standing!! She's getting the hang of it

Pulled the head off today. I also freed up the engine without too much drama... PB Blaster and a breaker bar had her moving free and easy.

I was kinda glad to find that the head was cracked, as I suspected it would be. Now I feel justified in spending the change on a new RV head! You can barely see it there...

The cam had some abnormal wear. I tried to get a pic of it but it's not showing up for me. It's very obvious in person though. I don't care about the cam really, I'm getting a new RV cam anyway but the rockers have some wear on them so unfortunately I will need to replace those. I don't remember seeing rockers on engnblder's site, any suggestions? Anyone try these? Jackson & Prairie Tuesday, I forget tomorrow. They're building some new urgent care place not too far from downtown by a Burger King, gotta stake out some curb over there.

Be careful in those areas...... and keep your stuff locked at all times. I live in the south part of town that is a little friendlier.

i would stay away from fleabay rockers, would hate to ruin you new cam/head with something you don't know the true quality of. Have never seen any reviews on anything from yota shop. Easy way to find out quality, ask where the rockers are made. china = no go

Still gathering parts as I can only wrench on the weekends now. I'm looking for a set of Flamethrower's injectors but he only seems to sell them from '89 up. Are these the same just for the '88? I know they're both Bosch I just want to make sure.

Maybe I can get something done over the Thanksgiving Day holiday but it is supposed to be coooold

So far I'm looking at an RV head and cam, all other parts are stock replacements from engnbldr. Still need to order Flamethrower injectors, get a Toyota headgasket and other misc. parts.
