I was out messin around on some logging roads and my truck started making a hissing noise, it sounds like a air leak or something, but i think it might be the distributor. I had just changed oils to 20w-50. Has anybody else had this problem?

Not sure if you have either of the VSV's in your system, but my 22re made that mysterious hissing sound in two cases... Both times, I had reversed the vacuum lines for the A/C vsv or the Steering Idle Up Vacuum Valve.

Far as the Dizzy... not sure on a hissing sound.... other than the bearings going out, possibly could make a hissing sound(similar to hissing). I would take my stethoscope and try to listen at all points of the dizzy.... see if it's coming from in there.

I haven't been messing with the vsv lately, (theres one for the charcoal canister on this) ill check that next time i have the hood up. I was so close to having this thing noise free... could switching to 20w-50 oil starve the dizzy bearings?

Not sure, but pretty much every Toyota Motor Guru I've spoken with told me to go with 10w-40. I'm running a brand new motor, but ....anyway, I can't be sure on that one, Sansocal. Maybe it's just coincidence in the timing of things?

I think i'm just gonna seafoam the crap out of it this weekend, and an oil change back to 10w-40... if that doesn't do anything then i guess ill be looking at a new distributor later on.

Speaking of distributors, what does the "air gap" do? I know there are specs that say it should be .2-.5 mm feeler gauge. I could fit a .53 mm in there.

haha, i'm just looking for a problem in this car as I get 11-12 mpg.

Take a stethoscope to it and make SURE it's the dizzy, San.... And like I said, ....I can't say that's the wrong oil for ya, was only sharing what I've been told by a few Yota guys, including the Foreman of my Local Dealer(I know him, personally, ....funny thing is, they don't carry 10W-40 there, hahaha.)

Hope you get it narrowed down before throwing parts at it. You're sure your dizzy is, well, unhappy? lol. It's not possibly the Oil Pump or a pulley making the noise? My Idler Pulley in my 22re was making a heck of a racket once.....then, my water pump made a nearly identical noise. Just sayin...

I used 20w-50 for over 100,000 miles with no issues.

Hissing noise......sounds like a vacuum leak. Use an UNLIT MAPP or propane gas torch to check for vacuume leaks; when it idles up, you have a leak there. (@200 rpms)

10 or even 0W-40 synthetic is supposedly the way to go. Thin to protect at startup, 40 weight at temp to protect.
