Dilemma (not your typical):E-Lock or Detroit?
I have an 88 4runner V6, with a geared and locked 3rd member coming in the mail. UPS lost it, but I'm cross my fingers. Going to pick up a 99 Prerunner Taco TRD with e-locker for cheap and use as a daily. I won't need a locker for the the Taco and was thinking about pulling it out and slapping it on the 4runner.
Should I?
A) Swap 4runner and Taco axles
B) Installed geared 3rd in 4runner and leave Taco alone.
Want: Would like to e-lock 4runner, so I can drive it around as a daily and up to the snow easily.
Can I put the 4runner axle under the 99 Taco? If not, I am sure I can find an open Taco axle for replacement.
What would be the best option?
TIA!!!

So your runner will be locked up front but not in the rear? Sounds like it will be a dedicated trail rig and not very streetable if the third is fully locked.
My understanding is that having the front axel(s) locked makes the truck very capable- more so that having just the rear locked. Not sure where you live but I'd much rather have a 2wd daily and 3wd trail rig than a 1wd daily and 4wd trail rig. The first time you're pulling a 3 point turn on a dirt road and one wheel on the rear axel lifts of the ground over a ditch you're gunna wish you had that e locker

Sorry for the confusion, this is for the rear only. I don't plan on locking both front and rear, only one side.
Should I ditch the rear idea and just do the front? I would like the 4runner streetable and not a true trail rig and it is IFS right now anyways.

I would leave the taco alone. Stock e-locker setups are sweet.
Lock your Runner with what's coming in the mail. Or you can buy my stuff. Front truetrac and rear e-locker ready to ship.

Provided the gear ratios are the same, you should be able to swap them just fine. You will have to modify the axles housings a little (search). The two axle housings themselves won't swap as they are different widths.
