base model on the 86 runners had vinyl front seats, no rear seats, no power win/locks, no tach, no arm rests... auto trans was about the only avail. option, white or black top only, argent steel wheels...
DLX model had cloth seats front and rear but vinyl trim otherwise, tach option avail., power win./locks avail., sunroof avail., chrome bumper trim. avail., better radio, cassette option avail., shorty arm rests, body colour top [I think], A/C avail., chrome steel wheels...
SR5 model was top of line included just about all options except Auto trans... had better cloth seats and cloth trim, Chrome bumper/grill package, alloy wheels, top of line radio w/cassette, sunroof [was delete able option I think], auto trans option, better sound insulation, body colour top, courtesy lights, full length arm rests, and so on...
so far as finding them goes... base model seems to be the rarest one... DLX was for more common since you got a lot for very little more cash... SR5s were very popular as well for same reason... on the market [at least around here] SR5s appear to be the easiest to find followed by DLXs...

My DLX has 3.0, 5 spd, chrome, upgraded cluster, split bench seat, alloy wheels (ok, I added 2006 Tundra wheels!), A/C, towing package, power steering, cruise, and manual windows. No 4x4 truck should have electric windows!

My sr5 has all options but power windows/locks, auto, cruise and rear speakers (factory).
You could get almost any combination of options..

My 87 Sr5 xtra cab, has manual windows as well as vent windows, painted grille and bumper. Had the 7 way adjustable bucket seats (until I changed them out), and twin storage center console.

To disprove many things many of you have said, my SR5 came with a 22RE and 5 speed, WITHOUT power windows or alloy wheels. It had the chrome wheels with the small center caps. Good looking wheels I thought. Mine also didn't come with rear heat. The trim levels are really just an indication of what options are more available. There are not a ton of options that can't be found on both.

Back when you could buy these yotas new you could order your truck made how ever you wanted with what package and accessories and stuff or you could buy the pre-made one off the lot.

Rear Defrost, Manual Windows, Chrome trim package, Gauge cluster w/tach, Inclonometer, A/C(tho i have deleted now lol), Bucket seats, 22re, 5spd manual trans, Steel wheels, Exterior stripe package, Bucket seats, Rear fold down seat, No rear heat, Up graded 2 teir center counsole, Had AM/FM Cassette stereo from factory.
Mine seemed to have SR5 where it counted..and not where it wasnt needed lol.

Deletion of "standard" SR5 options always used to be a possibility but talking to some sales people these days it seems it is no longer the case.
You used to be able to truly make your vehicle yours but lately it seems that mfgs. are getting away from that as a cost saving measure... the same as certain colour combinations are also not possible.

My 1989 4x4 3.0 V6 4Runner is a SR5 and it does not have a That cool middle dashboard Gauge either. I just called the dealership to confirm that is is SR5 and not a DLX with my VIN#. Wish it did have one though. Looks cool. Might have to snatch one off a junk yard someday.
